Tree hugging, sandal wearing, dirt worshipper... IN the HOUSE!!!!

I call all my suits, etc.. my "grown-up costume".

I'd really rather have a conversation with the ocean than with most people.

I want to buy a piece of land in my town and plant an orchard for public use...

I think I can squeeze my way in here!

We buy organic, and have written several letters to our political representatives about the way our recycling program works in Nova Scotia. We also recycle everything, and compost everything. Once we own some property we intend to garden as well. We also go out of our way to try to purchase items with the least amount of packaging we can, or make it from scratch.

DH is an Environmental Health Specialist and I am a stay at home hippie wannabe. We do our best to conserve and take care of our environment. We grow a garden ea. year. Re use rainwater, buy products w/less packaging. Buy and use organic when we can afford it. I used cloth diapers. We reuse anything and everything we can.

Count me in! I try to reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible. I enjoy my organic gardening. I'm challenging myself to keep my utility usage lower and lower.

Count me in. (Can't you tell from my avatar?) We even moved to the west coast to be in hippie heaven. The cool thing is that being a tree-hugging hippie is considered mainstream in this community. Everyone recycles, and there is a movement to make the community a "transition town".

We cloth diaper 2 kids, make our own laundry detergent, use canvas bags (I am so glad more and more people are doing this at the regular grocery stores now!), recycle as much as possible, buy bulk grains, beans, etc as often as possible, cook from scratch, buy local whenever we can, the only disposible product we use is toilet paper (I mean, we don't buy paper towels, paper plates, etc)... what a great thread. Thanks!

I see all you lovely people have these great signature lines etc and I am brand new and just starting to wiggle my way through all the forums..... I'm a Cook from scratch - no frankenfoods - recycling queen - don't buy clothing new - kind of Gymnastics Tree Huggin Mom :-)

I would like to be more green! I try when I can, we recycle, make homemade meals, do the hand me downs for clothes, only by things when needed. I have CFL's in my lamps, thermal drapes to keep cold out and hot in, in the winter and reverse in the summer. I live in an apartment, so things are a little more difficult for me to be completely green. I would love to have my own garden and be able to compost.....line dry clothes etc...but just can't right now....Someday..I will though.

Count me as one. I'm always looking to be more green. I still have far to go, but I figure it's the road - not the destination - that is most important.

We're eco folk from way back...when you had to WORK to find a recycling plant. I remember my BIL (then just out of high school) being amazed that we drove out onto the base's dump site to get rid of our recyclables, back in around 1981 or so. Before that, we recycled paper and glass, and fat (!) at the college we went to.

    Talking Professional Treehugger here!

Hi fellow treehuggers! I am new to FV, and just found this kith forum. I love it, such a clever idea. I have read and posted at a lot of different forums and never seen anything quite like this community.

Anyway, I've been a treehugger ever since I went to outdoor ed [public school program that involves a week of camp during the school year] in the 5th grade. I distinctly remember all the new ideas I was learning from the hippie naturalists and counselors all week making me feel...so excited, like I was "home."

When I was in highschool I went back to that camp as a counselor 5 times, and that's where I met my future husband (he was a counselor, too, not a camper! :p). So, nature, especially redwood trees and the ocean, is really important to us, central to our relationship. We actually started dating 20 years ago next month. Money is to tight that we aren't really feeling like celebrating, but I think we can plan to spend a day in "our" redwood forest and at "our" beach where we met, in honor of the day.

I can say I am a professional treehugger because I work for an environmental consultant. I feel so lucky to be able to work at a company whose values match mine. And since I live in the SF Bay Area, where hippies and treehuggers, and recyling, etc. are the norm, I can live this life very easily.

That said, I do sometimes do things that make my friends think I am crazy. For instance, when my husband went on dialysis, it really bothered me to have to buy paper towels, bleach, and small dispensers of anti-bacterial hand soap for him to use. I hadn't bought or used any of those things in years. But obviously, those measures were necessary for him not to get deathly ill. Anyway, I bitched about it enough, apparently (including the extra expense, since money was so tight), that one friend bought me a giant pack of paper towels for my birthday (she even presented them to me wrapped like a gift!) . It was hiliarious! And made me come to terms with the whole desperate times call for desperate measures thing. And I just doubled my greenie efforts where I could to compensate.

Luckily, so many green practices are right in line with being frugal, but some aren't (organic food is usually more expensive, so are animal friendly health & beauty items). But I do what I can while still staying within my budget.

Wow, that was a long-winded way to introduce myself, but hi y'all!

    Kara

I belong here too. So many saving and recycling ways are second nature to me now but there's still so much to learn. And all this encouragement is good, too.

I also belong here. Have been doing the green lifestyle for as long as I could remember. I studied skincare during college, and had to take some extra classes on organic skincare just to see that the industry was not all bad..
We have our own garden, and want to use rainwater to it now, and I also want to make a new compost bin, as the old one got left back where we lived before since it was in no shape to transport. We recycle, reuse and reduces, and also teach the kids that outside in the nature you can find peace!
