Wow, I just stumbled across this old post today and thought I'd update since it was posted in late 2008 not too long after the recession hit. We did not file bankruptcy, but only because my grandmother passed away and left me just enough money to pay all of our non-mortgage debt off. There was a year long court battle over the money with the administrator. We had to hire one attorney in MO and two in CA. We won, but the legal fees were $30,000 and was taken out of the money she left.
I wish so much I could've thanked my grandmother for her generosity and blessings, but as I mentioned, she never revealed her intentions. After the legal fees, we paid $50,000 of business and personal debt off. My husband's business is still struggling. But like a lot of business owners, we keep hanging in there waiting and praying for the economy to recover.
After being a stay at home mother for many years, I went back to work in 2009. Now I work full time (one 18 hour shift and one 22 hour shift) working with people with disabilities and I work 8-12 hours a week for another agency in home health care. I'm now seriously considering returning to school this fall part-time to earn my certification in specialization with disabilities.
So, we're still hanging in there, but at least we're debt free!

we fit here as well. new to the site. we have two good incomes, 1st & 2nd mortage, ccs, and health care bills for me. I work though I continue to cost us much money to take care of me due to chronic illness. And then there is the we spend what we do not have due to depression. That we confess and are working on. We are at 50 raising our 10 yr old grandson, and keeping our 7 yr old grandson who lives with another grandma in our lives frequently. We are in contact with their mother, our daughter. She will not be getting custody anytime soon. We also have a son who brings sunshine to our world that our daughter unfortunately does not. Praying praying. So we are here in this group, trying to get by without bankruptcy.
