Any Jewish Kith?
The issues surrounding keeping kosher at home or trying to have a nice Friday night family meal (with company
) can be quite the frugal challenge. Anyone one up for working together to conquer this frugal road bumps
?

Me me! I don't keep an entirely kosher home but we have absolutely no pork products and rarely mix meat and dairy.
We do shabbat here at home but tend to make stew type meals(cholent) which are typically frugal.
Nice to meet you!

Nice to meet you to. I'm originally from the south while my husband is from Montreal. I'd love to swap some kosher renditions of southern favorites. One of my most popular sunday brunch at home meals is veggie sausage gravy and biscuits. I've been told (and from my recollection - I agree) it tastes like the real thing. What are some of your favorites?

Where are you from in the south? I'm an Ozarks gal myself.
I'll have to get out some cookbooks. I don't always cook kosher(gasp!) so I don't usually have to switch ingredients unless there's pork in it.
We're conservative by the way. I know there's another Jewish gal on here( Hi Pam!) but I don't know if there are any others.

yes, i figured there weren't too many jews around here. i think most are intimidated by all the christians that tend to populate these sites. I'm originally from rural FL but my mom's family is originally from montana and kansas while my dad's family is from arkansas and indiana. lots of meat & potatoes as you might imagine, but thank G-d my parents have started watching their cholesterol etc. so they are a little more open to my veggie substitutes on their treif dishes.
How do you schedule time to make your shabbat meal and do you ever have guests for shabbat? are you a sahm? my dh and i are both in grad school and are working together to avoid childcare costs as much as possible. This month we managed to get by with only $30
in childcare costs!!!
Tomorrow I will probably make a homemade chicken pot pie with a side of coleslaw and carrots. Maybe a lentil soup to get things going and then applecrisp for dessert. Lunch will be leftovers and cold cuts.
What about you? any plans?

I hope you don't mind me jumping in your kith, but I wanted to say I hope no one Jewish is intimidated by other FV members.

Nope, not a stay at home mom although I do bring the kiddos to work with me at a daycare. I'm divorced.
No, I'm not intimidated in the slightest by the christian majority here. I'm used to it and it doesn't bother me a bit.
As far as shabbat goes I have no idea what I'm fixin' to make for shabbat. Need to start thinking about it so I can lay something out tomarrow. Maybe a soup or stew.

Hi Gals! My DH is a Jewish guy from Manhattan. He is not observant/religious (neither am I), but we did send our DS to the local JCC preschool and loved the family tot shabbat (held at noon, LOL!) ... we also celebrate the Jewish holidays because we want DS to have a sense of culture.

Nice to meet you Annie. I hope you pop in and visit us often.
As for me, DH made shabbat meal as I caught a terrible stomach virus (24 hours of sleeping, not eating, and feeling terrible night and day). Then poor DH started feeling ill Friday evening just before I lit the shabbat candles. We only ate the broth from the veggie soup he made and then went to bed at 7pm!!! We didn't get up until 7 am.... poor DH was up and down all night trying to keep control of his stomach.... this bug seems to be going around here. I hope none of your kids bring it home from school...its terrible!
Well, now my FIL is in from Montreal. He is helping us to take down some wallpaper and remove carpet from the stairs in our new house. We may even put down some Pergo type stuff in the dining room! Did I tell you guys we just moved into our house a month ago? We are working hard to get settled in and make the place our own --- read "get rid of tacky old wallpaper".
I hope you guys have a blessed week. I would also make a suggestion to those wanting to add some more jewish activities into their family's life --- start getting the kids excited about Purim and talk about Esther/Hadassah and how miracles can happen even we don't think anything is possible (the name of G-d is never mentioned in the story of Esther). Also Purim is a great time for a party and to send some food to a family in need.
Hugs to all!

Thank You!
I hope you don't mind my bopping in for a moment either. I just wanted to express my appreciation for the following suggestions. I am christian, but am also very interested in the jewish background of christianity. I have held a seder (with much help from our local Rabbi to ensure that I had it right) and am interested in learning more about the beliefs and customs associated with Judaism. I think it is sad that some Christian churches seem to have lost the connection with what we call the Old Testament entirely. I want to re-connect, and am trying to make opportunity to study.

Thanks gals!
We are homeschoolers, but if we did school DS, it would definitely be at the local Jewish day school here because the community is so nice.
Glad to have found you online.

Good luck on your Jewish research! If you want any book suggestions let us know! Since you did a seder you could maybe think of adding Chanukkah too. Lighting the menorah. I don't see any reason why as a christian you wouldn't be able to celebrate all of these things. Take care!
