I used Biospot on my dog and it almost killed him. An emergency trip to the vet after 10 pm on a Saturday and over $500 later he told me Biospot and Hartz are nothing better than poison. They literally poison the "host" (your dog) then the fleas drink the poisoned blood and die.

Anyhow, please think twice before using it. Try googling "biospot sick dog" and see what comes up before using it.

Wow! I'm sorry to hear that your dog was so sick. I've used it (and Hartz) before with no problems. If you google "sick dog" with "frontline" or "advantage" you get some horror stories there too. Nothing works for every animal, but it works fine for mine and I thought it was a good deal to pass along.

I've used this product on my dogs, too, with no problems, but I believe your story. When I worked at the vets office, we would occasionally have animals that came in with the same problems. Especially with Hertz. Sadly, Frontline and Advantage have the same risks. We have fleas and I've tried all the natural remedies. Since we haven't had problems with Biospot I will use it, but thanks for the warning. I wouldn't use any of these products if I could avoid it.

Unfortunately, any flea killer is poison, that's why it works. It's basically a nerve agent that's suspended in oil. That's why it's absorbed into the skin and can make dogs or cats sick so quickly. Some spot ons are safer than others. I too can not use bio spot or any hartz products.
We can use frontline since fipronil is safer than most other chemicals. Still some dogs react with that too. Sorry your dog was so sick.
    It is what it is.

Does anyone have suggestions on how to get rid of fleas without that stuff? I have tried...

    treating the yard with insecticide
    Bathing dogs in dawn soap
    apple cider vinegar in water
    white-bowl-under-light flea traps

We still have fleas. It's very frustrating.
