Default How often do you actually buy a product....

after receiving a free sample of it? And what types of things do you or have you bought?

I've found that I've been doing it more and more. I know that's the whole idea behind the companies sending out the freebies...lol But.. in the last month I bought a face lotion that I received a sample of and really loved and yesterday I bought Vital Radiance foundation. The sample I received was the perfect color for me and looks great. I wasn't too thrilled with the price though.... $18.99.... Yikes!

I usually don't. I like the free samples since I like to try new products but don't want to pay for it.

~Yes, I do. Not because I'm wowed by the product, but because the products are often new on the market and I can get them practically free by combining promotions and coupons. Even if I am wowed by a product, I won't buy it unless it's a great sale or I have a great coupon. Marketing has pretty much no effect on me. The only product I can think of that has really impressed me is Dove deoderant. But I like to think that I still win the battle by refusing to pay full price for it!

We've purchased several things after receiving the samples.

My dd switched her brand of tampons after trying samples of Playtex.

She also now buys the Noxema Blackhead control face wash-- she loves it.

She buys the Thermacare heat patches for her first day of her period, when she has cramps.

I buy some items, but right now, I'm not thinking of any.

First off, I don't request a freebie unless I know it's something either I or someone I know would actually use (for example, I don't request infant or toddler freebies since I don't have any kids and I don't have any family or friends with them either...if I did, I would request it to give to them). It's mostly that I don't want to order things that will just pile up (I have a small apartment).

Secondly, if I get a freebie that I LOVE I will keep it in mind when I'm shopping but I still wait for coupons or a sale before buying it. I rarely get freebies that I love so badly I will spend more than my "budgeted" amount, generally I weigh the extra cost against my financial goals and the product doesn't seem so wonderful then.

I'm attempting to live by the principles of The Compact in 2012. Wish me luck!

    2012 Financial goals
    • make an extra $15k over and above any flying pay (1705/15000)
    • pay an extra $1750 off my mortgage (557/1750)
    • bring EF back to $10k - $3533 left to save
    • avoid lifestyle inflation
    • improve investment plan (change accounts) - *grumble grumble* Bank made a mistake, need to re-do paperwork

    The Financial Goals I've achieved:
increased RSP contribution to $300/mth, posted budget on FV for review, saved $1600 to go on vacation

I think I've bought some toothpaste, maybe some lotion, & some make-up after sampling. Usually I don't buy things after sampling unless the price is right for us.

If it is a product that really just knocks my socks off with it's formula or ability and it is within my budget I will often purchase them. I am switching my shampoo to Herbal Essences new forumul because I got a sample and loved it. It is a bit more expensive than some of the others so without the free sample, I would have never even tried it but because they sent my free sample they have gained a customer.

I don't think I ever have bought any. I am a creature of habit, and a cheap one at that.

Hardly ever. I find those products are usually more expensive then what I'm currently using.

I'm also in the "rarely" crowd, but there have been a few samples that really impressed me a won me over - Thermacare, Philosophy Purity Made Simple Facial Cleanser, and Hefty Gripper trash bags are some that come to mind. I have never been impressed with any of the shampoos or conditioners enough to buy them.

I also have to add that Kotex offered a "free after rebate" a few years ago on their tampons, and I did switch to Kotex after that. They are cheaper than other brands and I liked them better.
