Hi there,
I'm back - in any case for this week since we go on holiday next Monday (28th) and I can honestly say that I can hardly wait.
You have maybe read what has been happening and it is far from being over.
My oldest son is still here and it looks like he will be for a while. The dramas about he and his wife and about his appartment where my 2nd son lives is still on-going and this is one of the reasons that I am SO GLAD that we will be leaving next Monday for 2 weeks.
Even though my son is 28 and is paying his way here I am trying to make life a little easier for him by doing his laundry, cooking his meals etc. and he seems to have relaxed a lot since he moved in - he no longer has daily headaches but seems to have found some peace, thank goodness.
I finally had some time to myself yesterday and I watched a recorded episode of Have I got news for you. It was the episode where John Prescott was the presenter. OMG he and Ian Hislop really had a go at each other. I laughed till tears were running down my face.
This week I am treating myself by getting my nails done (LOVE doing this but it is too expensive normally but am getting it done for the holiday) and having my hair colored and highlighted in a hair salon.*Avril*

Hi,
Good to hear your son is starting to find a bit more calm now, even if the turmoil isn't over. Sounds like your holiday is coming at just the right time for you. It'll be good to get a little distance from everything for a while. Not to mention your me time pamper, sounds gorgeous!
Things here are not great. As you probably know it's the emergency budget today. It starts in about 15 minutes. I am not looking forward to it. It's going to be just awful for us, DH works in the public sector and that's where the biggest cuts are coming.
The council DH works for have already been told to make £1.4 million cuts by the end of 2010. 200 people are to be made redundant and we don't know yet if DH is one of them. His office has to lose 1/5th of their salary bill which is probably going to mean 4-5 people will go. If I'm honest, it doesn't look good for DH. Not because he can't do his job, just because of the structure of the office and things like that.
Some sources are reporting that the economy isn't as bad as the chancellor is making out, some city bosses are even saying the cuts are too harsh. But I think the conservatives just want to cut the public sector regardless so this is just a very handy excuse for them... But then again, I would say that wouldn't I.
So I am on the lookout for jobs, which is a very depressing state of affairs as there's not much about, but I don't have to like it I just have to do whatever job I get. This is all about money and that's that.
Sorry, I don't really have a very positive outlook at the minute, all I can see is a future of poor public service, increase in tax all over the place and huge unemployment. But at least it's sunny!

For one reason or another I keep thinking back to the Thatcher years and all the trouble that they caused.
Across here we are in a state of limbo.
Our big winners of our general election were the right wing liberals (VVD) and believe it or not Geert Wilders and the two of them are trying to make a government as we speak - yes it has 'only' been 2 WEEKS and it could go on for ever I fear.
Our longest talks for a coalition were 7 months (I think in the
70's - amazing what you learn on talk radio).
I wonder what will happen with these guys especially since they need at least one more party to form the coalition since together they don't have a majority and a few of the others have said that they don't want to work together with Mr Wilders.
So for now we have a stay of execution regarding our budget but sooner or later it will come and it will also be painful.
Have you been following the football?
I (once again) heard on breakfast this morning that it is all or nothing for the English team this afternoon.
I believe (not sure because I am not really a big fan) that the Dutch team is more or less safe regarding getting into the next round but it isn't because they have been playing so well - they have just been VERY lucky.*Avril*

Just a quickie -
re: your election *yikes* that would be a coalition that makes ours look like hearts and flowers! Hope it doesn't drag on for too long...
re: budget, yeah, I think many people/business thought it was not as bad as feared. Again public sector is going to be hit in October with more cuts so we'll see where that one goes. I think the private sector/city is pretty happy as Osbourne wasn't too sever in terms of tax rises and so forth. I must admit I'm not looking forward to 20% VAT, but it's not until January at least.
re: DH's job, we should know more tomorrow. Two of his colleagues were laid off today, maybe that will be all for now. I feel very sorry for them, but will be relieved for everyone else if that is all for now.
I have seen some of the football, I was tapping up my old boss to hints about how to get a charity job today so didn't see England. But they won so I think they'll be playing Germany *roll eyes* or Ghana on Sunday. I don't believe I've seen the Dutch team so I guess that means they're winning. If they were as poor as France I think I'd have heard, lol.

Have you heard anything about dh's job and a possible job for you?
I have been thinking of you both a lot.*Avril*

I know you're on holiday now (hope you have a good time), I couldn't get online until now as one of my rabbits chewed through the router cable *roll eyes*.
We don't really have any more news. There is to be a restructure in the department and hopefully that will mean there will be no more redundancies but there will very probably be wage cuts and more work for everyone. We could absorb a smallish wage cut without too much pain so we'll see.
I am, as we speak, filling in job application forms though! Thanks for thinking of us :-)

Hi,
things aren't desperate here so I'm just looking locally at the minute for jobs - while I still have the luxury to pick and choose. I'll be hitting the sites like Monster when things are a bit more urgent.
Thankfully we have an emergency fund and DH still has his job for the minute so we're saving like mad, hopefully one of the local jobs I'm going for will come up and there will be less worry.
thanks :-)

*waving*
How are you?
I'm still on vacation but had the chance to get behind a computer for a few minutes.
We should be back in Holland on Tuesday evening but with the amount of laundry that we have it will be days before I re-surface.

Hi!
Hope you're having a good time and that you make it out from under the mountain of laundry safe and sound, lol.
Things are great here, there's still some job uncertainty but we're just getting on with it and not worrying. Actually, we're having a really good time.
Look forward to hearing about your holiday when you get back. Maybe we could even start a new thread!
