We are off to enjoy our freebie today! Anyone with a Fylde postcode can get up to 4 free passes for Blackpool Pleasure Beach this month so we are going this afternoon. I doubt we'll go on any rides - not really my thing. But as I've never been it'll be good to have a look around. Plus the prom re-opens next week. It's being handed over from the construction folks to the council today, this weekend is for the council to look over it for snagging. So it should be open on Tuesday or Wednesday *yay*

Hope everyone has a good weekend. My parents are coming to help us re-do our patio on Sunday, not something I'm looking forward to but it has to happen...

    Hi,

We did indeed have a good afternoon. I was really surprised how nice it was in there - with all the walkways and places to eat and stuff. I saw Dora the Explorer! She was dancing and so we had a little dance with her which was fun. I learned all about RugRats and Spongebob - DH really likes Spongebob's friend, the pink starfish, lol.

Hope everything is good with you - we had some good sun this weekend didn't we, it's like winter today though.

We've had a good news-bad news day today. Bad news Rooney has chewed through the cable from the sky dish to the tv so we have no tv! Good news DH won 15 on a "guess the weight of the baby" thing at work!

    How are you all?
BB how is your dh's stepdad.

Sorry not to have posted for a while - feeling a bit bleh ! (whatever that means but it explains exactly how I have been feeling.)

I can hardly wait to go on vacation - we'll be leaving next Sat., July 9th. I do feel a bit like I am running away from my problems when I think about our vacation and a Dutch writer once wrote that it isn't wise to take a vacation to run away from your problems because you take yourself with you wherever you go.
On saying that, my mum always says that a change is as good as a rest.
I'm going with my mum on this one.

We have been getting a visitor recently - called Murphy - and we wish that he would move the h... out.

In the last 3 weeks we have had blocked drains whereby we couldn't use the kitchen sink/tap for an entire weekend (plumber had been but couldn't fix it till Monday).
Have you ANY idea how often you use the kitchen sink on a daily basis - even it is just to put water in the kettle or wash your hands or rinse a veggie? OFTEN - I can tell you.

We also got a HUGE HUGE HUGE tax bill which I don't agree with on principle but we have to pay it anyway (before July 9th).
We had budgeted for it but it was more than we had budgeted.
I am so p..... at this you cannot imagine. It is probably fair and all that, but still.

Long story. Last year dh didn't get a bonus but got shares in the company. He paid a nominal amount for them - $1.
We have had no profit or gain or anything from these shares AT ALL, they were just made out in his name.
But under Dutch tax law, just because we have them, we have to pay tax over the value of them - 50%.
As I said, it is probably fair and at some point we should get something out of it all but I am still annoyed at the entire thing (probably just my mood at the moment).

Then we had a leakage in same (kitchen) sink (non-related incidents) and to top it all, on Monday my washing machine said 'I'm quitting"! Of course with a load inside which I had to take out - dripping - wring by hand, and hang up somewhere where it didn't matter if it dripped or not.
I couldn't get a repair man to come in till yesterday (Wed) at 6 pm.

He had a look and said that he could MAYBE fix it but the motor was nearing it's end and the next time we would have to get a new one.
So somehow or another we will have to reserve around € 800 in the budget - just in case the motor breaks down before the end of the year (which seems like more of a certainty).

On the one hand I wish that this had happened after the holiday but on the other (wiser) hand, I'm glad that it happened before we left so that we will be more careful with our money when we are away. The guy did manage to fix it for € 90 but did mention that the motor could go at any time.

However on the subject of being more careful on holiday, I am afraid that I will be like a kid in a candy store in one store.
I hope to go to Bed Bath and Beyond when we're in New York because they sell the candles that I LOVE (with a vengeance) - Yankee Candles.

I can get them here and my parents could get them for me in the UK but the scent that I REALLY LOVE is only sold in the US (spiced pumpkin).

Normally when we are in the US I only buy a couple of small jars and some tea-lights because dh is there saying (as all men do)
    a) how do you expect all that to fit in the suitcase
    b) who do you expect to carry all that and
    c) aren't you concerned about the weight of our suitcases?
However this time we have no weight restrictions for our luggage so
I may have a problem when I go into the store.

Anyhow, for now my washing machine is humming away upstairs (and will be for the entire day since I haven't done any laundry since Monday morning and Fiori is very good at throwing stuff in the laundry.

Further today I have to do a HUGE amount of grocery shopping (Fiori's hockey team plus some of her friends will be here for a BBQ tomorrow evening - all 17 of them).
I'll also be re-doing the budget to try to find the money for a washing machine.

Hope you all have a great day (and won't someone please take Murphy off my hands)?

Ouch. I feel your pain, that's not nice of Murphy to land all that on you *shakes fist*

At least you have the excitement of the holiday! I also agree with a change is as good as a rest.

DH's stepdad is the same. Can't remember what I've already said so I apologise if I'm repeating. He went to see the specialist a couple of weeks ago and the chemo has stopped the growth of the tumour but the size hasn't reduced any so they can't operate. So we're just in a management scenario now. He's starting a new course of chemo next week - it's different stuff so hopefully he won't be allergic to this. So we'll see what happens there. He's also on long term antibiotics for the e-coli. So that's that.

Have you seen the BBC tv show Coast? We don't usually watch it but we recorded it a while ago as they were on the Dutch coast. What a cool coast! I loved it!

Not too much going on here really, we finally painted our bedroom but the rest of the house is now at that "looking worse before it looks better" place. Still it's moving on. But I talk too much about painting so I'll shut up about that.

    Hi everyone,

Hope you had a good weekend.

We did lots of housey stuff on Saturday then yesterday we went up to Fleetwood, took some photos and ran around on the beach for a bit - didn't even have an icecream, very well behaved.

Back on an exercise kick now, just been on my exercise bike for 45 minutes, now I am collapsed in a big heap.

Have a good week whatever you're up to.

Just thought I'd write a quick post before we go on vacation.

This week has been chaotic (for a change lol). Dh stopped work on Friday July 1st for his 3 weeks vacation time. That evening we had seventeen, 18, 19 and 20 year old girls for a BBQ (Fiori's hockey team).
We were exhausted afterwards. The first one arrived at 4 pm and the last 10 of them left at 11 when a taxi (mini bus) that they had ordered to take them into the city arrived. (They partied the entire night. Fiori arrived home at 2 am which wasn't bad.)

Since then we have been trying to get organized, getting the garden done etc. and then - surprise surprise - ALL the apricots decided to ripen at the same time.
So since Tuesday I have been making jam.
I washed and cut up more than 20 kgs of apricots and made jam.
I will be putting the last one into the freezer in a couple of minutes.

Of course both dh and my debit card split within one day of another (Mon and Tues) leaving me calling the bank in a panic saying that I HAD to have both before we left on Sat. morning. Thankfully we have a GREAT bank (Rabobank) and both cards have been replaced. Absolutely GREAT service.

Tomorrow, Fiori once more has to sit the theory exam for her driving license (fingers crossed please) and we are both going to the hairdressers.
Timothy will be coming here tomorrow afternoon to stay overnight so that we can get everything packed late Friday and early Sat.

We will all be leaving (dh, Fiori, Timothy and myself) at 11 am on Sat. morning.

After all the excitement of the last weeks and anticipation leading up to the vacation, I am feeling a bit deflated - most likely because of everything that had to be done this week and everything that still has to be done.
Probably my fear of flying is also starting to rear it's ugly head. (I am PETRIFIED!! (always have been) but I refuse to give in and I just do it, shaking the entire time.)

So I will be absent for a couple of weeks, enjoying the NY sunshine (I hope), stimulating the American economy by doing a lot of shopping (at least I know that Fiori is a lady with a mission and Tim has a long list) and then recovering on board the MS Rotterdam.

Take care and 'see you' all in a couple of weeks.

    (((HUGS))))

    Hi DD,

How have you enjoyed the summer holidays?

DH took a week off at the start of August so we had a couple of "daycations". We went to Dumfries and Llandudno. They were both great for very different reasons. We went up the Great Orme on the tram and it was great. What was the first thing we did when we got up there? Look for Blackpool Tower of course! lol

We went to the Illuminations switch on on Friday. It was soooooo busy. We didn't have wristbands for the main concert (which was on Central Car Park nr Coral Island) we just walked up and watched it on the big screen near North Pier. I can't imagine how many people were there. We had a great night though, but my legs were killing the following day as we ended up walking more than 11 miles! Here are a few pictures, couldn't get many as it was so busy. The really modern building is right opposite the Tower and is the new wedding venue. I think it's beautiful. The comedy carpet is almost ready too and looks brilliant. I didn't take any photos though I thought it only fair to wait until it was officially unveiled!

We didn't go up for the street dance but I knew it was on. We're thinking of going to the fireworks thing at the end of the month if the weather is ok.

Doesn't the Winter Gardens look amazing now! We went to a comedy gig there a little while ago and it just looks so gorgeous.

It's freezing today isn't it. We've had a ton of rain each morning but then gorgeous afternoons. I do enjoy this time of year, although I'd prefer it to be a little less windy. The bad weather has brought on very early talk of Christmas though so that's not a bad thing.

Have loads of veg roasting in the oven today, seems like a good day for it and I'm craving pie so I think that's next on the list. Enjoy the peace and quiet while it lasts!

    Default *long* update

    Update on a LOT.

On May 30 on this thread I explained some of the things that were happening in my life and which were making my life a bit difficult to say the least. Since then there have been some HUGE developments.

    To continue the story
There was no contact till we were on vacation. We received a text message from our eldest son saying that he had decided that he didn't want any contact with us at all and would we respect his wishes.

We were flabbergasted but didn't let it spoil our vacation.

After we came home on July 21st, there was indeed no contact and I started to go to a therapist since I was having trouble dealing with it all.

Fast forward to today Oct. 17th. Our eldest son has once again moved in with us. You are probably thinking WTH????

Second week of Sept. we got a telephone call from our eldest son's wife. She was crying. She had just had a miscarriage. We didn't even know she had been pregnant (no one in the family told us.) She had been 11 weeks pregnant. She begged us to come by and just talk with our son.
We did - that same evening. She wasn't there. She had gone to her parents since she wasn't coping with everything at all.

After that our son came to see us a few times and the day that I threw a birthday party (Sept. 25th), they both came by. She looked like he!! and wasn't doing well at all.

Last Tuesday (Oct. 11th) our son called and asked if he could come by for dinner alone.
He came and told us that he and his wife were going to split (again!!) and that they would each go their separate ways per Nov. 1st.
Last Sat. (Oct. 15th) we received a text message asking if he could come and stay with us for 2 weeks till he got his apartment sorted out (Yes, still the same apartment - still not sold - still not sorted out.)

We felt we couldn't refuse him - as I mentioned in my post on May 30th - I won't put a child of mine on the streets if I can - but to say that I am happy with this situation, then I would be lying.

I am so afraid that this will once again give trouble just when things were starting to become something looking like normal.

They have split up and got back together so often in the past that I am at the stage that I don't really care if they get back together again or not - I just don't care since I think the relationship is doomed (but maybe that is just my mood today talking).

Anyhow, he moved in yesterday and we have said that it is for max 2 weeks since he doesn't need any more time than that to get his apartment sorted out. It is a question of cleaning, central heating fixed and a new washing machine.

Our other kids have said that they really just don't get it that we have taken him back in after everything that he has done to us in the last year.

I know that this is a LOT of info and probably TMI for a lot of folks but I thought that I would bring everyone up to speed.

I stopped going to the therapist since I had the feeling that I was back on the right track with him regarding contact etc. but I am seriously thinking about going back just to keep myself sane.
For now I am doing it day-to-day.

    Thanks for listening/reading.
