If you could ONLY walk each day... would you survive?
*Spin off of $10 gas thread*
Say if all modes of transportation were gone (or too expensive) and you could only travel as far as you could walk... so say 5-12 miles from your *current* house/residence.
Do you live within 10 miles of what you need to survive? Would you be comfy?
If you had to stay within 10 miles of home for years or forever? Yes it's hypothetical.
It's a weird thought to ponder!Starve a bank... Pay cash.

My two sons are type one diabetics so me without access to a pharmacy would not be pretty. We live MILES and MILES away from anything and everything so life would not be good.....we'd be selling the cows and moving to town!

Yes, I would. I live one block from a grocery store, behind a dunkin donuts for coffee lol walking distance to a dentist, doctor, vet, daughters school, playground, block from pharmacy/cvs. I'm in the "heart' of my little town where everything is. I don't need to go far for anything. Oh and we also have a bank across the street and I live behind a bar (development is behind a small strip mall ont he main road in town) I could walk to a tattoo parlor, police station, fire station, church, pretty much everywhere.

Well.. wait a minute.
All forms of transportation?
Or are you referring to modern transportation.
We could potentially revert back to horse and buggy.
I'd could ride my bike.
I could walk to a job- but I'd have to leave my good paying job for something within walking distance. And that's okay.
But in a nutty shell.. I'm nearby all that I need.

Although we live out of the main city, we are easily within walking distance to: Several grocery stores (Fred Meyer, Albertsons) the post office, library, one thrift store, several pharmacies/drug stores, the Dollar Store, our bank, etc. We'd be fine. Dr, dentist, Vet, etc. would be the exceptions.

I think if things got as bad as that we would be looking at a world vastly different than the one we have. Neighborhoods/rural communities/suburban communities would re-invent themselves into villages, again. Grocery stores and such would shut down, while community farmers would set up more roadside stands. There would be a catastrophic economic depression that would in turn create more cottage industry as neighbors turn to each other in sharing skills.
To answer your question, except for DH's work, we never have to travel more than 5 miles from our house for anything. I like our doctor, but could find one closer. Am already working on finding a closer dentist. I homeschool, so no need to travel for that. We have several grocery stores and discount stores local, and with no traffic on the road could easily walk/bike to them all.Amy

I don't have a car so this question is easy for me answer.
I live within a 15 minute walk of a grocery store (I have a cart on wheels), pharmacy, dollar store, Goodwill store, dentist and chiropractor. I chose the dentist and chiropractor specifically because they WERE within walking distance.
The only hardship would be work...it's 3 miles to my workplace. I have tried walking it a few times but get really tired at the halfway mark. So I take the bus. But if I HAD to I think I could build my endurance up and do the walk.
Also, my family doctor is far away...there is a major doctor shortage in my city so I am lucky even to have a family doctor, but she is way across town, so it would also be difficult to get to her by walking.
So I guess my answer is...yes, I would be 80% comfortable living in a "walking only" environment and wouldn't have too much hardship with it.Debt-free forever!

A doctor would be the only problem for me. And dh's work.
I have a long walk to the grocery but if I had to I guess I could do it. Just not sure how the cold stuff would do on the way back.
I would have to get a basket for my 10 yr old , never used Bike LOL

Nope-- I live over 60 miles from work (no doctor's office, nursing home or hospital within 10 miles of my house). . . no grocery store for over 20 miles. The only place we could reach on foot is church

Within 1/4 mile we have Dunkin Donuts, two pharmacies, four coffee shops, several restaurants and fast food places, a grocery store and a discount clothing store. Within five miles we have 3 more grocers. My work is five miles away. My husband's work is many miles away. Could we do it? Sure, we'd make do. I'd actually kinda like it I think.

I live in the middle of nowhere. The nearest grocery store is 10 miles away, which is the nearest town. My dh commutes 100 miles round trip. So, walking everywhere wouldn't be 'doable'.

Yep. And I don't know if I'd be happier, but I'd definately be healthier!
Work is only 2.6 miles away and I could get most of what I need a block away. I would have to walk further for some groceries.Stacey
