Default Ahh pasta is so expensive now :(

I went to the store today to buy some more pasta. I couldn't believe it. First I went to the dollar store and they were totally out of pasta ( I see some people are stealing my money-saving idea..lol). So I went to the regular grocery store. I got a 450 g (incredibly small) package on sale for 1.19. I couldn't believe my eyes when my used-to-be usual brand, Primo, was 2.29 for a 600 g bag!!! WHAT!???? I remember this time last year I could get a 900 g package for $.99.

I guess pasta is now luxury. This sucks. Pasta was my favorite budget meal.

    Thanks for letting me rant.

Anyone else finding this incredibly infuriating?

I never buy pasta at full price so I hadn't realized how much its gone up. Last yr at this time I got a coupon book for a yrs supply of pasta. I used one coupon a month and combined it with a buy one get one sale so I haven't paid for pasta in an entire yr. This month is my last coupon, I better make it count.

I just have one coupon left too! How sad.

Sometimes my grocery store has closeout deals on pasta and that's when I stock up. They got rid of the Disney brand pastas, so I got boxes of Nemo and Pirates pastas for 25 cents each. But I'm running low again!

This is also my last month of my free barilla noodles and sauce. I always combined it with a bogo sales as well as the barilla coupons that occassionally came with the Sunday Paper....sigh.

I'm serious - is semolina really expensive these days? How about making your own pasta?

Rachel, I'm not far from you in Canada and just bought pasta today too. You're right...last year Primo 900g was 99cents. At Food Basics today it was 1.97...double the cost. I bought 800g of the store brand for 1.47 which is still 50 cents more (for less...since the package size shrunk from 900g to 800g). I don't have the patience or equipment to make my own (and no desire to) so I guess I'm stuck.

Semolina is a little pricer than AP flour.... at least it was last year when I bought some. I usually mix AP with my semolina when I make pasta just to help stretch it out more. Homemade pasta though is the bombe!

I feel really bad for people in Italy. CNN said that pasta prices there have more than doubled in the last year! This is total insanity. But yes our price increase alones I'm quite ticked off about. I eat a lot of pasta myself and it's no longer the super cheap meal it use to be

If you all can get to a Sam's Club, their big 6 pound bags of pasta are still under $6.00 (American) here.

I bought it by the case!

Grocery store pasta is REALLY up!
