Save-On-Foods Strike
Well, with a 58% rejecting the settlement offer, Save-On Foods will be going on strike as of Sat. June 28 at 6pm. (I am of the 42% of accepting the offer.) This strike is only for the Lower Mainland.
This is very frustrating for me. I am not in support of the strike, but yet I have no choice.
Most of my department is opposed to the strike also, so if you see me, I'll be frantically trying to hold the morale together in the deli department that I help manage.
For all you bargin hunters, perishable departments will be clearing out their stock at discounted prices Saturday afternoon.

Very, very, very good question Suki. The gas here is $1.40 ($4.50 compared to the states - I think). Most managers commute atleast 30-45 minutes one way, we get transfered every couple of years. Food prices are going up every week, I have front row seats for that. I have to constantly change prices in our department that come from head office. And yet, we are going on strike.

Most of the staff (58%) want more of a raise, halt to converting stores to a different banner under a different contract, although if they were in a converted stores they would keep EVERYTHING they have under their save-on contract.
I could keep rambling on... but I'll stop now...grrrrr

The economy is actually still pretty strong here. I don't understand all the strikes either but I can see where they're coming from with rising costs of fuel, etc. I never get why anyone goes on a strike to begin with. I'm sure there are other means of conflict resolution outside of a strike being the last resort.
I'll let my MIL know about it since they have a SOF in Edmonton but not one in Calgary. I'm sorry about you being forced into a strike.

The strike is only for Zone 1 (Hope to Squamish) it doesn't effect alberta, vancouver island, or east of hope. None of us understand why it's only Zone 1.
