not recently because prices seem to be really high on produce right now, so I just don't buy fresh. I would love to have corn right now, but I will not pay those prices.

Roadside yes!
I go every year to one not far from our house. Prices have always been good. We shall see this year.

Considering NJ is the Garden State, you'd think there'd be roadside stands all over the place. However, not in my neck of the woods.
We do, however, have a farmers market that comes in to my town every Saturday morning. Last year, the prices were high. I haven't checked them out yet this year.My Blog: http://amysreallife.wordpress.com

We stop at roadside stands quite often. Strawberries are big here right now, so that's what I'm after. So far the cheapest is $1.75/pint...the grocery stores are selling for $2.49-$3.29/box. I also buy my produce at a small local produce market once a week. Supporting local growers, trying to buy organic and being frugal can be a tricky balance!!!

The only thing I've bought so far are strawberries and they were 4.25 for a quart box...They were so good

Corn prices these days are crazy, 'cause everyone's growing it for making into fuel, not for human consumption. They ought to make fuel out of that green slime that's on the coast in China where they're going to be doing olympic stuff. They're just putting it in landfills, but they should make fuel out of it 'cause we can't eat that slime, but we can eat the corn!

I just read an article in our farm bureau magazine that said that using corn for fuel isn't what is affecting the prices, that it is transportation cost. Good ol' farmer's propoganda or the truth? I have no idea!

Corn is always expensive here...and I literally live in the middle of corn fields. We usually pay about $3 for 1/2 dozen. The beautiful things...Del Monte rents the farm land that my parents own. The years that they grow sweet corn in those fields, my parents can't grow corn in their veggie garden becuase of cross-contamination possibilities with their hybrids. So they have a written contract each year that my parents can't grow corn on their land...but they can take as much of the Del Monte corn out of the field as they want. You better believe I go down there and fill up my grocery bag full!

I have to say, the 5.50 for a dozen ears of corn doesn't sound that bad. I bought 3 ears for a dollar the other day at whole foods so that would be 4 for the dozen. I bet as it gets closer to august, the price may go down a bit. I try every year to grow corn, but the deer or rabbits get it first. augh.
I buy veges from small farms in the area to supplement what I grow. I bought a quart of strawberries the other day from a farm that a 17 yo bought last year and is growing 13 acres of veggies. It cost me $5 but they were worth it! They were so sweet, adn I was helping a young man live his dream instead of selling that land to a developer! Yes, money is tight, but the difference in food taste is apparent.Wife to DH

Yes I much prefer to buy directly from farmers either at stands or farmers markets. It's usually more expensive but farmers need to make a living as well.

Corn for fuel isn't what is driving the price up and that's not propaganda, even Mother Earth News is having to backtrack on some of the stuff they printed in the past. If I was a farmer I would plant what I could make money on and those who plant to sell corn to eat are finally getting a reasonable price for their corn.
KandyCorn bicolor is .40 an ear here or 17.00 a bushel. That's a 2.00 jump from last year, sweet corn is the same. Freezing corn bought from a local farmer....priceless.

I buy strawberries - 2 large baskets/$7
Giant white onions - 2/$1
Green Onions - Large Bundle for $1
Looking for peppers though and tomatoes, can't find any :-( Tried a local farmers market yesterday - didn't have too much, going to another next Wednesday!

here in NY roadside stands are as expensive as grocery store, sometimes more. First of all if their saying it local corn and tomatoes here their lying. It's too early, I'm sure if I got up nice and early and staked out the stand, I'd see a truck pull up from Hunts Point delivering fruits and veggies. I love going to the Green Dragon in Lancaster, PA, best farmers market I've ever been, does anyone live near there? How lucky you are! 4 hours is too far for me to drive these days. But I'd sure love too.

There aren't a lot of farmers markets here, so it's tough for me. But I was at Henry's (Whole Foods type place) yesterday and they had corn for 25 cents an ear. Needless to say it was very crowded at the corn...
