What Kind of "Piggy Bank" Do Your Kids Have?
My parents came over today for dinner and gave my kids some spare change for their "piggy banks" (neither of which is actually a piggy bank) and it got me thinking that I wondered how other people's kids saved their money.
My Dd actually has my father's bank from when he was little that I also used when I was little. Here is the modern version:
http://www.retroplanet.com/PROD/25041
Ours is black and a little rusty after 60 years, but it still works. I can't even tell you how many memories I have of putting money in this bank and waiting for it to get to $10 so I could open it, and then when I couldn't wait, trying to jimmy the money out with a nail file through the dollar slot. She loves it just as much.
Patrick has a dinosaur bank that is clear plastic and the dinosaur "eats" the coins and each type of coin is diverted to a different leg.
Matthew has a silver bunny rabbit bank that he got when he was born. Pretty traditional.
When the kids get allowance or birthday money, 1/2 goes in their "piggy banks" and 1/2 goes into their "spending" container (each has one of those cardboard Tootsie Roll banks where they keep their spending money).
So, if you have children, what do they use to store their money?
(Not a burning question, but I'm interested.

We used to do sort of the same thing, except they had 3 containers...tithe, spend, save. Now that they are older they have savings accounts and they still tithe, and I am not sure where they keep they spend money, they "hide" it from each other.

My dd puts hers in a decorative green bowl in her room and my ds has a special cup that he puts his in. I'm the one that actually has a piggy bank which I use for silver coins. I have a very old glass wine jug that we are saving pennies in. We didn't drink it though. LOL Dh found the jug at a flea market and thought it would be a great launcher for fireworks. I on the other hand confiscated it for the penny jar.

My kids got these banks from my sil (who got them from her work) that are divided into separate areas, so they can put money towards donating, savings, spending, and investing.
Here's a link to a picture:

Those are pretty pricey, but she got them for free
ETA: I showed Dave the bank that you used growing up, and he said he had the same one
I had a glass piggy bank that I had to smash open when it was full.

DD has a few

When I brought her home, I bought her a silver 'block' bank.
When she turned 6, I bought her a soccer pig.
She keeps her money in an old tissue box
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!

My son has a huge big hard plastic bear that was my husbands(his stepdad). He is 16 now and still saves his coin in it. He also has a bunnykins one that was given to him as a gift when he was Christened. Someone mentioned a glass pig...I also had one! It was see thru(kinda beigey color) and I dont know if we ever broke them....just used to shake them like crazy to get the money out!!!

My kiddos are 4. They each have an empty Jif container for their money. We even took a sharpie and wrote their names on the front!
I wanted something they could see into, to watch their savings grow. I loooked in some local stores, but couldn't find what I wanted.
I remember saving my change in a miracle whip container growing up. My first car cost $50 (it was wrecked.) My brother (who fixed it up for me) was shocked when I hauled out my change and promptly paid him for the car!Jill

We started out using empty formula cans. then a SIL gave my kids a piggy bank one year for christmas. And we kept quarters in an old half gallon juice jug. (then someone broke into our home and stole all the kids banks and all the quarters from the juice jug plus a lot of other things) We now keep very little extra $ in our house and have anything bigger locked up in a safe.

DD uses a little metal bank I got from chicago. DS uses one of those ATM looking banks that keeps track of your Money.
Once in a while we empty it and put into their savings account. They do not usually spend their money yet, they are 5 and 9.

This is the family piggy bank. http://www.rubylane.com/shops/victor.../01742?gbase=1
We all put change into it and then let Wesley put it into his savings account. He loves going to the bank to 'posit his money pwease' (that's what he tells the tellers. Then he asks for a 'weceipt pwease.'
He also has a 'special money' piggy bank. My parents give one to all the babies in the family for their first Christmas. It's a huge piggy bank and has things like a 2 dollar bill, an eisenhower dollar, a gold dollar, a buffalo nickel ,etc in it. Working in the bank has allowed me to fill it with all sorts of cool stuff that comes thru my drawer---foreign currency that gets stuck in the coin machine, a silver note, 1940's wheat pennies, etc.McD

AmyBoz, I had that same cash register when I was a kid! I'd forgotten all about it! I think my mom got it from a yard sale or something. I wonder whatever became of it.
I save my kids' money in empty formula cans which I decorated with scrapbooking paper. My DH recently opened an ING account for them, though, so we can put larger monetary gifts for them in there, and they can benefit from the small amount of interest. (Not to mention, it will keep them from blowing it all.)

My DS has a piggy bank I bought in Texas on vacation. It's huge and a cow dressed as a cowboy.
My DD has a pig piggy bank that is also dressed as a cowgirl and says her name on the side.

my dd started out with a traditional pink ceramic "piggy" bank, but she kept prying off the bottom and hiding her money everywhere (the refrigerator, under the bed, in the toilet tank LOL), so I bought her and DS big plastic "crayons" to keep their savings in. There is no way to get into them other than cutting them open. This is where they keep all their change. Spending money, my DD keeps in her purse, DS keeps his in a jar on a shelf in his closet.
