I use a list also and allow myself an extra $20 in case meat is on sale. But I have two running lists. One is for groceries and the other is for Dollar General and $1 store for shampoo, soaps, toothbrushes, etc. Works for me.

I write the list on the front of the ad. If there is a coupon in the ad, I write "-c" after the item. If I have a coupon from like the Sunday paper, I put "-x" after it (or just an "x" if there is a "-c" already). If I am pricing, I write a "-p" after the item. If I am just looking (like to compare or want to look at the ingredients in the item), then I write "-L" after it.
