Thread: $300 sunglasses

The most I ever spent was right around $150 for prescription sunglasses. They were a huge splurge for me at the time. But now I just order really cute ones from Zenni for about $18 or something like that.

I would never pay that much for sunglasses. I break them too easily, (and DS is good at breaking them too) so I buy $5 ones at the swap meet. My dad is an optician, so if I wanted good ones, I could at least get them at cost, which is such a huge discount.
My DH has a pair of regular glasses that retailed at almost $300. He needed new ones and he liked the frames. They're Gucci, but at cost they were only $90. And he's had them for 2 years now, so that's good.

Wow... I buy $10-20 sunglasses and break them quite easily! I think it is a rather silly way to spend money. I unfortunately had spent $500 on a pair of much needed eye glasses after my new kitten had chewed up the glass and frames this month. It was very depressing to say the least, with no specials going on (bad timing but I needed it or my vision would get worse) and no insurance.
Back on the frugal bandwagon for the third time and hoping to slash my debt by the end of 11' and start saving again!
No more CC debt except school debt.

I think it's a much different story if they were prescription sunglasses. Lauren has a really strong eyeglass prescription (the first pair we bought her from the eye dr's office was over $240), so I can totally see where they would be $300 if they were prescription sunglasses.

I lose them all the time. There is no way I could buy those.

I do buy good sunglasses, not at the $300 range though. But I wear them for many years - 5 or so. I buy quality that isn't going to break easily, I put my glasses where they belong the moment I take them off my face so I do not break or lose them.
I also hate "disposable" things. Just more wasted junk in the world.
This is something I'm trying to teach my kids. If you want things, you must be responsible i.e. not lose them, and be careful with them.
My 5 year old daughter wants an Ipod. Yeah right. What I'm telling her is that she hasn't shown me that she would be responsible i.e. not lose it, put it away where it belongs, and treat it so it wont break.
Meanwhile my son is keenly aware that he is never getting another Nintendo from us i.e. you got this for Xmas and if you lose or break it you are simply out of luck kid.
Did I mention the mother I heard the other day complaining that if she found ONE MORE Ipod in the washer or dryer ruined ...
