Yep, every state has an unclaimed property division. When I was just out of high school, I worked in a credit union and part of my job was to try to track down people with abandoned accounts (that hadn't been touched in 5 years). If they didnt' contact me, within 6 months (and several letters), then I had to send their money to the state treasurer.

Most people, it was just a few bucks in a forgotten account...but some people had hundreds or even thousands of dollars sent if we couldn't locate them!

This was one of the things we looked at when we started drastic debt reduction. DH had a few hundred hanging out. We had to turn in some proof that he was really him but there wasn't much to it.

My mother in law's name was on there after she passed away 18 years ago. We filled out the forms, sent them in, then proceeded to wait 7 months before we got notification that all that was owed to her was 29 cents that was interest from some account at the state owned nursing facility that she was in when she died.
