Default Food Costs per week from May 2008

Those of you who have the TWG may remember that in one of the books she shows a chart that says how much a person of such-and-such an age typically spends on groceries for that time frame per week. If that makes sense. Well, obviously the chart in those books is outdated taking into account the recent price increases.

However, I was looking at a site and found this chart, but for May 2008!
    I thought I'd share .

    You can find it at:

That is really neat. Though what I find interesting is that for a two person household you add the two figures together and add 10%. On the thrifty plan, my household would spend $80.52 a week. We actually budget $30 a week for two people so I am kicking butt with that. I can't believe that liberal plan...ours would add too $153 a week!!! Thats over $600 a month!!! Insane!!!

On the thrifty plan I would be spending almost $100 a week!

On the frugal village plan, which isn't listed there, I spend half that.

HMMMM, considering I also include HBA and cat food and litter, I come in at thrifty and low. Which I guess means I am thrifty if I take the HBA and animal supplies out.

Good to know since I thought I was more on the moderate end taking into account what other people spend on this site.

On the thrifty plan, I'd be spending $34.60. That's about the average I spend a week on groceries.

I just figured ours out. According to the thrifty plan it would be $144 a week. We spend less than that and include pet food for 6 critters, litter, cleaners and personal grooming and tissue.

$89.80 a week or $359.20 a month for one adult female and 2 kids ages 5 and 9. That is way too much. Here we spend $150-$200 tops. and that is including feeding daycare kids. 1-7 daycare kids a day.

Well you all are doing better than I am! I am right bang on for the thrifty plan for 3 adults (1 male 51-70 and 2 females 19-50). but we buy a lot of organic food and health conscious stuff. Plus I didn't bother to convert Canadian to American dollars. Not sure what the exchange rate is right now. I spend about $414cdn./mth. right now. Just did the conversion...it's $413 US...not much difference! But this is food only...no HBA, cleaners, etc. And we don't have pets.

Yeah, on the "thrifty plan" that site has us spending $200/week. That's $800/month. I spend between $500-600/month for everything...food, HBA, pet food, cat litter, paper products, cleaning products, etc.

This is an awesome chart, it gives us something to compare how we are doing. The thrifty plan for the two of us came to $80.52 for food. We spend a little less than that per week, but that includes all our Cat food/litter/treats, toiletries, Household items, and our food. It seems like there should be another category (even thriftier plan) or something like that, for the majority of us . I guess sales and coupons aren't taken into consideration when figuring out this chart!

According to the "thrifty" plan, our family would be spending $128.40 a week, and the calculations on that chart only include food! We budget roughly $100/week, but that includes everything from cleaners to pet supplies!
