Default Going frugal has changed DH's outlook on finances

DH and I had a sort of impromptu meeting last night because I was talking to him about increasing the minimum on the VISA, his parents coming to visit Tuesday-Wednesday, and DS4 going back with them when they return to Edmonton after DS4's first set of fillings. I was sort of blown away by what happened. I told him that we have enough in savings right now, in both accounts, for him to have an EF and me to have an EF (yay!). The mini-EFs are now taken care of. Our next goal was, of course, to snowball our debts and hit up the Best Buy account first before it starts accruing interest in October.

He agreed that we need at least 5k in our savings for two big things: a new roof and a new furnace. When we bought the house, the inspector told us the roof had another five years on it. The furnace is also really old, so we're looking at replacing both of them in at least the next two years. He wants 5k into savings to take care of that, which is completely possible. He also wanted to kill the debts in the same time frame that I am, which is within eighteeen months (we have about 9k+ in debt).

The thing that shocked me was when he said, "I've always relied on my parents to bail me out if I need it and I don't want to do that anymore."

He's now really conscious of what he's spending his money on. If he's buying lunch when he's at work for other people, he asks them to give him the cash for it and they do. He stopped putting money into an online poker account because he realized he wasn't really getting anywheres. Sure, he'd win a whole bunch of money but he was burning it back out and he doesn't want to do that anymore. He's completely fine with me going grocery shopping every two weeks and he's excited when I got DS4's new school clothes on clearance.

I just wanted to tell you ladies and gentlemen, from him:

    Thank you.

It is so nice when both partners are online.

I don't have any problems in that manner at all. When dh made the money decisions it all went south and I took them back over. Now things get done and he LIKES it lol.

Great news that things are coming together for your family.

No one ever said: I sure wish I never had an EF, the worst decision I ever made was to save money and pay off debt!
