What goes around comes around
As the Mom of dds--2 of my own and one step I have been put through the ringer when it comes to clothes and labels.
I am not saying my girls were spoiled or stuckup--they just wanted what they wanted and they tended to save their money and get what I refused to buy. I set a budget and if you get 3 pairs of jeans or one is up to you but don't come crying to mama when your booty is cold because you don't have any jeans!
Anyway here I sit years later with a dd who is 20 and about to start her 3rd year in college 10 hours away and who has had to learn to make her monthly allowance work.
What does she want to do next week??? Go to the GOODWILL LOL!
Not this week when they are regular price--oh not her--she wants to go during $1.49 hanging garment sale week lol!
Oh I remember $80 buckle jeans and albercrombie shirts...oh my!
She is still picky about her jeans but she buys those herself but she wants shirts and she is will to spend HOURS combing the racks for cute buttondowns and t shirts and possible cute jackets.
Oh what goes around comes around.
Now I have dd12 who is just getting into the expensive clothes stage....I can survive one more dd, I can I can!
She won't even go to Goodwill with us....
One day, one day...

Way to go Mom! I'm getting a chuckle too these days. DD#2 is heading off to university half a continent away next month. She's 21. She wanted me to take her shopping at Value Village, our local thrift store, for clothes. I get a good chuckle out of it all. LOL

I think it's great! Only when they are older and are spending their own money do they realize the costs of things.... my DD, DH and I LOVE shopping at the thrift stores.... last summer when DS was home from college, he actually went with me to the TS and he was astounded that he got 4 pairs of jeans for $30!
Wednesdays are half price day here at the Salvation Army! That's the only day I go.

This is encouraging to me - my 10yo dd had declared walmart jeans not good enough for her - I told her that she only has so much money for school clothes so if she gets expensive jeans then she wouldn't be getting much - boy it starts early! We haven't shopped yet so we'll see how it goes!

I used to be the same way. Had to have the name brands. But there is hope. I shop the resale shops and all the sales. Never would have thought of going there when I was young. There is hope and I think I am proof.

I think 90% of my brothers college wardrobe came from the Salvation Army and Goodwill stores when it was at UNC.
When I worked at a resturant where I had to have navy pants I didn't own any that were navy so I went to goodwill and got them there.

When my niece saw the name brands at the thrift stores she decided that it would be a good thing to look. Now that she's on her own she still shops the thrift stores. There's always hope!

LOL That is me. I never had namebrand clothes. Didn't know what they were. I have more name brand from the yard sales and Good Will than I ever had.

I'm lucky that neither of my kids ever went through the name brand stage. They are 20 and 21 and they love Goodwill and Yard Sales. We've always gotten great name brand items there. I bought my dd 2 name brand skirts there Thursday for half price. A few months back we were there and they had gotten some very expensive shirts in that fit my son perfectly. He bought a dozen shirts. He also found a gorgeous brown leather dress jacket for $10.00 and 3 trench coats for .99 cents each. He racked up and only spent about $60.00 total. He couldn't have bought one of those shirts for that.

OMG!! I did the exact same things with my children!
I gave them thier budget for clothes. You can choose to buy ONE pair of designer or three pairs of good non-designers.
And yes.. they're in college.. buying used clothing.
LOVE IT

I'm lucky my dd 12yo isn't into "name brand". She just wants cute. Now, my definition and hers are a little different. Especially when it comes to pants. BUT I can pick up her some shirts and she's usually ok with what I pick but pants. I can't find what she likes. She wants designs on the rear pockets. I don't think it matters all that much. She's in TN with her dad (we're divorced) right now and comes back 8/5. I have her school supplies and a few shirts. A jacket I like but not sure if she will like it (Eddie Bauer corduroy tan - very neat looking and only cost a quarter) but if not, I can sell it later. I haven't bought her any pants - that will be when she gets back and we're together.
(Edit)
Forgot to say she LOVES thrift store shopping. She loves shopping anywhere. We also have a "free-shop" and she likes that too.Last edited by DonnainME; 07-26-2008 at 07:07 PM.

I guess I'm kind of lucky in that respect. My teen daughters LOVE shopping at the thrift store. I can't remember having to buy them brand new clothes that weren't gifts (and those are usually band tees or hoodies from Hot Topic).

My DD (18) was the same way until about a month ago. We went to Goodwill & she found an Abercrombie wool winter coat, that is beautiful, for $2.99! She can wear it when she goes to college, and it will be the height of fashion! lol
