How else to use dehumidifer water?
I just moved in with my fiance and he has a dehumidifier in the basement. I've noticed that right now it has been filling the 5 gallon container with water every 2-3 days. So I've already used it to water my plants, but I only have 3 and they don't need 5 gallons every 3 days!
What else can I do with it?
I don't have a yard. How does the toilet thing work? Stupid question maybe...but if I pour water in the bowl will it just start flushing? And how does that use less water? Not sure I will do this regularly as I don't want to always leave the container out of the dehumidifier of course.
But what else?Last edited by acidcookie; 08-03-2008 at 02:22 AM.

Is this just plain water? How about pouring it in the washer then washing a batch of clothes?

I think you turn off the water to the toilet and fill up the tank (the back part not the bowl). It uses the water you poured in instead of fresh water. 5 gallons is probably pretty heavy so if you don't have a toilet near you wouldnt want to strain yourself moving all that water.

I use ours to 1) water any plants that need it, then 2) fill up the watering pitchers, then 3) fill up some empty milk jugs to save for plants in the winter when we aren't running the dehumidifer and finally 4) pour what's left into the washer for a start on the next batch of laundry.
Sure, you can use it to flush toilets (just pour a gallon or so right into the bowl and it flushes without using up the water in the tank) but that's a little inconvenient since you would need to have the water there at a time you needed to flush.

Yeah the toilet thing is a little too inconvenient because I have to bring the container up from the basement, but the washer idea is great! Our washer is also in the basement, just a few feet from the dehumidifier. Thanks!
It's pretty clean water, though not for drinking. But that said, there is some scummy stuff in the container. I tried to clean it out with vinegar & baking soda, but there's just a hole for an opening so you can't reach in and just wipe it off which is what it needs.
