Rachael Ray Really Ticked Me Off!!

I don't know why I turned the show on in the first place, because the woman annoys me no end.

There was a repeat of a show from a couple of years ago, with this woman who is very frugal. Rachael basically made fun of the woman and then got one of her fashion "gurus" to take this woman shopping, but she wasn't allowed to look at the price of anything. In the end, the dress she chose for an event (which was a beautiful dress, by the way) cost (on Rachael and her show) $450! And then the guru and Rachael both said "You have to splurge on yourself like this once a month because you're worth it!"

    Huh?!?

Yes, I'm worth it. I'm worth not having debt up to my eyeballs. I'm worth living within my means. I'm worth understanding that having a $400 dress in my wardrobe doesn't make me a better person. And my children are worth that too. I agree that quality costs, but what's the problem with buying it on sale? Who was that woman hurting? Honestly, I felt embarrassed for her and the way she was treated on that show.

    What a stupid cow.

Stupid cow indeed! I scored a beautiful Max Studio dress and a purse for $18 at consignment yesterday. You do not need to spend $450 on a dress to look & feel fabulous!

Once a month??? I swear some people just don't get it. I agree witht the OP what I deserve is peace of mind about my finances. I find other ways to treat myself w/o blowing my families budget. Has she ever heard of taking time for a nice leisurely walk through a local park?

This is exactly why we have such a financial mess in our country!!! The idea that you must splurge and have the top of the line best has caused no end of grief. I wonder if the lady immediately sold that outfit on ebay the next day and used the money to stock her pantry?

A splurge to me is not buying just from the clearance racks at Kohl's - ya know - maybe paying $25 for a shirt. Nope couldn't spend that much. How about $25 for a sweater? Maybe!

I remember seeing that show last year. I could'nt believe it either. I thought the woman was really smart handling her finances the way she did. Yes it is very easy for Rachael Ray to buy whatever she wants on what she makes. I thought she was very rude and degrading to her.

DD #1 and I went shopping yesterday for a dress for her....another formal military thing they had to go to. She found a gorgeous beaded dress at Dillards on clearance for 52.00 (reg 197.00) shoes, and jewelry, and spent under 100.00, which I thought was awesome!

i'd like to turn it around and see her do a show on a "wise clothing budget".

my budget for the whole year is 500. wow.
    11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
    credit card debt 7500
    mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
    then live on the rest!

i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

I can't stand Rachael Ray....drives me up the wall.

Ticks me off to hear people think they NEED to spend a crazy stupid amount of money on themselves to feel good. that just sounds really superficial and selfish to me.

I don't have to spend a dime to feel special!

I did not see the episode, but you are right , that attitude is what can get folks into major trouble. I agree we all need to splurge, but it has to be in line with our budgets.
I know alot of folks here post of their splurges so they do not feel deprived, then you really get into trouble.

However my occasional splurges are, let's see, buying REAL name brand Pepsi, a new nailpolish, or an outfit from a thrift store. But a $450 splurge each month...yikes!!

Cristi, cool thinking! I hope she did.

I don't think I've spent that much on myself in the last 2 years! Stuff, stuff, stuff. Buy, buy, buy. Be cool. Wear the 'best', have all top of the line. Such a crock!!
