    Default Discount Bakery raising prices

I stopped in today to get my 10 loaves of breadstuff for $7.99. They are now 10 loaves for $8.99 (or .90 per loaf). I commented to the women at the till about the prices of discount bread going up. One of the ladies told me it was going even higher. They were going to double the price. They were just waiting for the signs to come in. It's going to be $1.99/loaf if you buy bulk, and $2.19 if you buy individually. Their excuse was the price of transportation.

I did a quick calculation in my head. It'll be cheaper for me to bake bread then. I'm going to play with my bread recipe and see if I can come up with one with no honey in it. That's the big expense in my bread recipe. Right now it's costing me just over $1.00 a loaf to make an organic loaf at home.

I was just about to go shopping at a discount bakery. That isn't even discount anymore. I'd have kindly reminded the women there that you can get bread for $1.49 a loaf at Superstore if you buy five loaves. Bread's going up there too, I imagine, so I don't know if that $1.49 per loaf price is going to be there tomorrow when I go shopping.

I don't know what people are thinking. I am a huge fan of Aunt Millie's Italian Seeded bread - I just can't do it anymore. $4 on a loaf of bread I can eat in one sitting (alone). I need a bread maker or I need to take a day to learn how to make my own.. Ugg!

We have a breadmaker but are only going to use it for the mixing and rising. We are going to start taking out the bread and putting it in a pan for the oven before baking.

Do any of you do this? How does it work for you?

I sometimes use the breadmaker to mix and rise the bread when I'm short on time. I always shape it and bake it in a loaf pan in the oven. I just don't like how a breadmaker bakes and I hate that stupid hole in the bottom of the bread! Works great for me!
Normally I make several loaves at a time in my Kitchenaid ...especially during the school year when the kids take sandwiches every day. The breadmaker comes in handy when I need some time to do other tasks and don't want to mess up the kitchen. We switch out between a whole wheat potato bread and a old fashioned buttermilk bread. I haven't bought store bread (except for 2 emergency loaves) in over a year. I'm not sure how much money I'm saving but I like knowing what's in my bread and we all prefer homemade wheat bread over store bought.

How many loaves do you guys usually bake? My problem is that I could bake it, but I'd have nothing to store it in. I've never bought yeast, either, but I do have a ton of flour and with the prices of bread going up I might as well look at something else.

We don't eat alot of sandwiches anymore and the bread is for stuff like grilled cheese sandwiches, and that's usually once a week.

Our discount bakery isn't much different that going to the grocery store and using a coupon... And it's way out of our usual path around town...not worth it.

I used to bake all our bread, but just haven't had time. We grind our own wheat...it's cheaper and more nutritious...smells wonderful!!

I normally bake bread in the winter. I just stopped in the summer because we don't have a/c and I didn't want to heat up the house. I have a neighbor who is in the same situation and she bakes her bread early in the morning. I might try that. Except I can't get up till around 8 am.

I normally mix up four loaves in a big bowl, knead it for 10 minutes, then plop it in pans in the oven to rise, and cook all at once.

Four loaves is 2-3 weeks worth of bread for us. It's basically just the two of us. One loaf disappears when it's fresh from the oven if DD#2 and her BF are here, but they won't be by the end of this month.

Could you bake it at night? Do you stay up late?

I know of a few people who bake at night after it cools off a bit if they need to bake. One lady purposely stays up really late on like a Friday or Saturday night to bake during the summer.

This sounds like a plan. Friday night would work...

There are no outlet stores on myside of town. And you couldn't pay me enough to go the one on the otherside of town. Not a safe neighborhood. I may have to start baking my own again.

I quit (SP) going to the discount bread store about four months ago. It's cheaper to buy it at the grocery store when they have a discount on their breads or sweets. I couldn't believe how much everything had went up. Right now we have a Walgreen's that just opened up and they have Wonder bread for .50 cents each.

The only outlet (that I know of anyway) is in a city that I would be afraid to visit, so I'll be passing on that one.

Your doubled price is still a good deal when comparing to my grocery store--even our store brand is more expensive than what you pay.

If I could bake bread that my family would use for sandwiches, I would do it in a heartbeat. (I don't think it slices thin enough for them). I may invest in one of those cutting guides (that I saw posted here at one point) and see how it goes.

I make bread all the time, i use my bench mixer for the dough then i bake in pans. the best thing i brought was a bread keeper (not a bread bin) this is two clear plastic (hard perspect) that slideds over each other depending on the size of the loaf and it has a cutting guide thing in it with grooves, so i can get the loafs thin enough everyone will eat them for sandwiches and a loaf can last about 4 days in this, it is wonderful i brought it at a kitchen wharehouse a few yrs ago for 15.00.
