thankfully we live in a cold climate and don't really have to worry too much about things like that. I'm a bit concerned about my unopened stockpile of flour, but so far it seems fine. I make sure to freeze everything for 48 hours before using it anyway. At least if there's extra protein, it's dead!!! Ugh... Rice goes into the freezer right when it comes home. Foreign stuff seems to sprout bugs real quick otherwise.

I have big glass containers with glass lids for all my dry goods ie sugar flour cornmeal, brown sugar. I keep them on my counter.

These were the bags that still had stuff in them on my pantry shelf.

I will be more careful from now on.

It sure hurts to throw out bags of food stuffs but on the other hand my panty is so clean and I checked out all my dates and tossed out of date items.

A couple of weeks ago I was making brown rice (organic brown rice I bought at Whole Foods and put into a glass jar). I put the rice in the boiling water and thought "what are those brown things floating on the top?" Then I realized...ewww, those are bugs! I through all the rice away sterilized the heck out of the pan and container and made mashed potatoes in another pan instead. It took a good week before I made rice again and I completely inspected the rice!

I didn't know you could refrigerate rice? I may have to do that next.

I have no problems seeing bugs outside...but when they enter my house Oh Boy! they'd better get out of my way!

Does anybody know how long you can keep food in the pantry without this happening?

I absolutely do not have room to put any food in the freezer like that [I have a small fridge and a small freezer in it as well.]

The pantry is the only place I really would have room to stock up on rice and Bisquick.

    Love,

    Jen

I think that when you bring home rice, flour, you put them in the freezer for 48 hours. Then into some type of sealed container whether it is metal with rubber rings, plastic or glass.

I have a 20 lb bag of Asian rice that is sitting in it's paper bag. I so need to deal with it. I wasn't thinking bugs, but mice. As twice in 15 years here, we've found mice. They come back into the house when the whether cools.

Well now I'm thinking I better get in mine and check on things, and maybe take some prevention measures. My mom got them one year and after that she used to sprinkle pepper around the pantry...have no idea if that works.

Hi! I'd love to have it if it's a reduced fat recipe.

My cholestrol is sky-high so with everything I can, I try to go with the lowest fat alternative.

    Love,

    Jen

Do they give you those containers for free? I was just at Costco and noticed a 25# bag of flour for $7.99, which I thought was a good deal, but I thought, "How and I going to store that?"

Get 5 gallon food storage buckets from a ranch supply store.....weevels (sp) come from the original packaging crap is in, plastic, cardboard and such...I buy in bulk and have the 5 gallon buckets with lids for the storage and you dont have to freeze them if they are in those.....I'll take a picture of them so you can see what I am talking about and post it for you after I get home from the wrecking yard!!!

I have always been told to keep brown rice in the fridge because it can go bad fairly quickly as opposed to white rice (something about the oil that is in the bran layer) and I always prerinse my rice before cooking it anyway...in case there are stray bits of who knows hitching a ride
