Wonderful husband, BUT....
Since I've returned to work full-time and Dh is on holidays, he offered to cook dinner last night. I was very excited, we had bought 2 chickens for $8.00, (1/2 the price they usually are up here).
All day I thought about our delicious frugal dinner.
I suggested he stuff the cavity with a cut up lemon, a few cloves of garlic and a sprig of rosemary from my herb garden. When I came home, I could smell the delicious chicken cooking even from outside. He had cooked it with carrots and onions with mashed potatoes on the side. Wonderful man!
But then, I looked at the grocery bill receipt. I knew he had gone back to the store to buy a lemon, but next to the lemon purchase he had bought "poultry herbs" for $2.49! Half the price of the chicken! Our meal went from $4.00 to $6.50! And what gets my goat is that I grow a fine selection of herbs on our deck!
What can I say, dinner was delicious. I didn't want to get mad at him because he had worked so hard on dinner, but sometimes I feel like its two steps forward, and $2.49 poultry herbs back!
Anyone else have a similar Dh story?Last edited by Kaos Kitty; 08-15-2008 at 09:47 AM. Reason: spelling :0

Stop fussing over the grocery receipt when he cooks, if you want him to keep cooking.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

I keep reminding myself, if I want it done my way I need to do it myself. This world doesn't need two of me.

Reminds me of DH's first chicken dinner he cooked for me in our appartment. His mum never taught him to cook and he had just been laid off from work. At the time I was travelling 2.5/hrs a day to and from work. Sooo.. I thawed a chicken the night before, put all the dressings and asked him to pop it in the oven around 3h00 in the afternoon at 350. That way when I got home the chicken would be done and pipping hot. I thought it would be easy.
LOL
Anyway, when I got home he was upset telling me our oven (which was used) was broken. "How come?" I said. He tells me that he put the chicken in the oven at 350 like I told him but after about five minutes the little red light went off, so he increased the time, the light would come back on for a few minutes and then go out again. He spent the afternoon turning up the oven everytime the light would go out and then turning everything off and restarting!!! LOL
Noone ever told him that when the light goes out, it means the oven is READY not BROKEN!!!
Needless to say, I had one sweaty, white chicken on my hands.
We ended up eating pizza.

Heck, when I was growing up, the only light on the oven was the one inside. That'd confuse me too!

LOL! This is one reason we saved so much money when I quit work and stayed home. Our grocery bill dropped from over $600/mth. down to $300/mth. That was 15 years ago now. DH knew how to cook - it was just he did it batchelor style (he'd been on his own 8 years before marrying me). He didn't care about cost, just taste.
You know, when I think about that, we're doing really good. Groceries have gone from $300/mth. to $450/mth. in 15 years. Not bad really, when you think about it. Course, the $300 included diapers, formula and HBA stuff. It doesn't now...

kaos kitty , that was so sweet of him to make dinner.
he probably didn`t even think about what herbs you had out side.
next time you know he`s going to cook remind him about them.

When my dh calls me to say he wants to cook--he means on the grill--I always ask what he wants to cook.
When he shops he gets only the finest cuts of meat--yeah..yeah...sigh
And he always comes home with 4 bags of chips!
I could send him to the store for bandaides and he will walk in with 4 bags of chips!
Another thing is when dh cooks he kills my kitchen--tornado time and I have to clean it!
SOoooo I like to know what he wants to cook on the grill so I can shop for it and supervise and I make the sides. The math never lies, budget in INK!

These stories are funny!!!
If I ask DH to get dinner ready... there will be take out waiting for me. So, I don't ask anymore.
Learned that the hard way. sheesh
Oh... he's so proud that he was able to ORDER the take out.

Hey hey hey! Don't be knocking the deep challenges associated with ordering takeout!
There's "understanding the mumble", "the heavy indian accent (usually associated with ordering italian)", "asking for a total 3 times", and "getting them to understand your address", just for STARTERS!
You women who never pick up a phone to order food don't understand what we hunter type men have to go through to keep you from having to cook! This is serious work!If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.

its funny you should say that because i absolutely HATE calling to order food, it is exhausting!! id almost rather cook.....ok no i wouldnt i call DH while he is in the car and beg him to stop someplace while he's out

we keep food on hand that is DH cook-able it usually comes in a bag from trader joes or is ready except it needs to be cooked like a burger or stuffed salmon....everyone is happier this wayReba
