converter box coupon ???????
Should we all send for one of these just in case down the road we need it? Right now we're paying 130 dollars a month for Dish TV, DH has to have his HD channels, (I know its outrageous) and really the only thing DH and I disagree on. But at some point if we couldn't afford this dish, it would be nice to know I would have some type of TV. Could someone who knows about these converter boxes please explain this to me? thank you!

I recently got one and it works really well! They send you the coupon which takes $40.00 off the cost of the box. The box which is voted the best is the zenith brand. They are available at circuit city. You receive a whole bunch of extra channels. For instance you get 4 PBS channels. The picture comes in crystal clear like cable.Get your coupon right away, you won't be sorry!

I am not going to get the coupon for the simple fact, we can't even get channels on the antenna. I don't think a converter box will do us any good. We have the lowest plan on DirecTV (family package) and get our locals thru that.

I have heard the boxes are well worth it. One thing to keep in mind is that the coupons expire 90 days after they are issued and then you are not eligible for any more coupons. In my area the average household gets 7 channels and hey the chance to have a little tv without a monthly bill is very appealing to me!

You are actually the exact person that these converter boxes are made for. In February, signals will no longer be sent out via analog. Every channel will emit a digitized signal. If your tv isn't set up to accept a digital signal you will need a converter box. This box will convert the digital signal into a signal that your tv recognizes and will play. If your tv was manufactured in the last 2 or 3 years you are fine and will not need a converter box.
Once the signals are converted to digital, all free channels (local networks, pbs, etc...) will come in crystal clear. Your antenna will be obsolete.....it doesn't matter what you can/can't get with it now.~Jessica

This isn't exactly true. You still have to have an antenna. For our local area, without the box we can get five channels. I hooked up the converter box and we can now get 14 channels. We still have a few channels that it claims we should get but the signal with the antenna is still to weak to receive it. And if it makes a difference, I bought the one that Walmart sales.
We have Dishnetwork and have been getting local channels through it but they don't recognize all of the local channels that we get through the converter box. They only show six. I'm going to quit paying the extra for the local channels through Dish and save the $5 a month.

Well, I just requested the coupon. It says that it will ship to me the end of Sept. I will get them and we will see.

You have to have the antenna now because the signals have not been digitized yet. In February, all of the signals will be digitized and your converter box will work as it says it should (you'll get the rest of the channels that you aren't getting right now.) There will no longer be any such thing as a "weak signal". It'll be all or nothing.~Jessica

I have already received both of my coupons (actually they are like a gift card) and I purchased both boxes. I gave one to my daughter and she hooked it up to her tv with her rabbit ears...they went from getting 3 channels to getting 17...so I think they are worth getting.

Can anyone tell me how much the boxes cost? I've received my coupons, but haven't gone to the store to price the boxes. I'd like to pay the least possible.

anyone know if this will work with a tivo and not having cable?
i have cable now and am seriously thinking of doing away with it. but i really, really like my tivo and consider it worthwhile. im afraid that to use my tivo i will have to have the box that my cable company gave me to get the cable channels.
TIA

Can someone please tell me where I can get one of these coupons? We don't have cable, so I should probably get a box. Thanks!

We just hooked ours up and here is how they work:
- Right now you hook it to your tv (easy easy) and to the box you hook your analog antenna. In February you won't need your antenna anymore.
- We get 11 channels some areas get more some get less.
- the cost of the boxes I have seen are $60 so after the coupon (which looks like a gift card) the cost is $20.
- and as far as where to get them just google "digital tv converter coupon" you can do it on-line or it will give you a phone # if you prefer.Last edited by frugalbabe; 09-09-2008 at 09:20 AM.

I was just thinking that DH said that we didn't need one, but if we are going to be able to get so many channels without paying???? Did I get that right?? You'll get more channels without having to pay more???
I think that I will have to chat with him about this some more!!
