Question MP3, iPod or external hard drive?

Our shelf stereo system was fried in an electrical storm this summer...we had power surges nail it when the tree came down on the lines. DH and I were thinking this might be an opportune time to downsize and update the audio technology in the house.

We listen to lots of classical/opera CDs, folk, instrumental, easy listening stuff. We have over 250 CDs of non-operatic stuff, and then another 100 CDs in sets for symphonies and operas. We don't know what to do.

We have two computers: one on the top floor and one in the basement. We want the sound on the main floor. If we use an external drive, how do we get this?

    Other questions:

    1. What's the best choice for quality audio?
    2. What's the frugal choice here?

    Any other issues I'm missing?

    Thanks,

    Jean

I have the 80 GB ipod and I love it....because I can put audio books, podcasts, music, videos, and tv shows on it. But I like to be able to take mine with me wherever I go, doesn't sound like that's what you're looking for.

We have a 'tuner' that is part of our entertainment system that I love. It has a 6 cd changer and radio. We also have mp3 players (off brand ones that the kids gave us for Xmas last year). I wouldn't be able to live w/out my cd player...I like playing music on my puter but it's not the same for me.......hth.

I have a 30GB ipod & I got a Bose sound deck for it. Expensive but the quality of the sound is amazing!! They are small enough to move around the house if you want the sound in another room & you can take the ipod in the car with a jack. I haven't regretted them one bit (I have to admit I got both on reward miles program so I didn't pay for them)
