Frugal internet service
Hello everyone.
I am thinking about changing my DSL internet service from Verizon, to someone more reasonable. Please advise of any company that may fit.
Thanks!

This is one of the few places I was not willing to go with the lowest cost. I spend SO much time on the internet I am willing to pay for a fast broadband service (about $45/month here after all the taxes and fees are added in - it would be a little less if we bundled cable TV with it, but we don't do TV).
I've seen lots of "cheapie" services for $10 or less per month, but they are dial-up and having lived with that in the "bad old days" I will have to be really really desperate to go back to it! (I know some of you don't have any choice due to where you live - I feel your pain!)

I dropped Verizon for Time Warner. For about $140/month, I get cable, Internet and phone service. That's only about $25/mo more than I was paying for just phone and dsl with Verizon.

We go with Access Communications for $55/mth. for high speed cable. That's Canadian money though. I'm sure you can get a better deal in the U.S. Often we find if we want a quality provider we have to pay a lot more. We could go cheaper, but the quality just wouldn't be there for us.

I get the middle speed on the DSL from Cox Cable. I'm paying $24.95 a month and that's not a special price package, just the DSL.

I have Cox and pay $27 for the slower speed. I had PeoplePC for a while for $10 a month but I could never get on when I wanted to. I also had At&t and I could never get on and they require a contract so I had to pay $200 to get out. They were $15 a month for DSL at the time, 5 years ago.

At&t has a $10 a month dsl service if you qualify. You have to really search the website but it is there.

I have a local DSL service that costs me $45 a month and they are expanding to more areas. The perk they give me is that for $5 more a month I get unlimited toll calling on my phone. Verizon charges 5c a minute for toll calls on their cheapest plan. If I sign a year contract they will knock off an additional $10 a month, too.
I would check to see if there are any local DSL providers that people are using. Check them out well, though, because often they want you to sign a contract for a year and you don't want to get stuck with a stinky one.

I have ATT for high speed DSL and U-Verse Family (their least expensive TV system) and pay $50 for both. I did have to negotiate -- it seems the DSL is stuck at $25 per month, but they have more flexibility in the U-Verse. I also have my land line with them, but it isn't bundled -- it costs $60 per month but I don't have a cell so it's worth it.
Now if I could just give up the TV like I said I would -- two more days to meet my goal -- but ATT will probably talk me out of it AGAIN! GRR.

As for myself, I have Verizon but in the past couple of weeks I come soooo close to changing to cable internet.
Not because I don't get good internet service from Verizon but it's just the b.s. that I have to go through dealing with anything I have to call about.
I moved the 1st of the month and all I wanted was to have my internet moved from one apartment to another [both are in the same building.]
They told me that they wouldn't be able to hook me up until September 16th. HUH?? Over two weeks to re-hook me up? To me, that's ridiculous!
Then too, I bought my new laptop just before I called to change the service to the new apartment.
I was on the phone with the girl for over an hour and dumb as I was, she told me I needed a new router because I had a laptop now.
That router ended up being $64.99 plus $16.99 s/h ... she was insistent that I "had" to have it [a wireless router.]
Later I find out that I did not need it after all and I could use my old DSL box and so forth so I called back to cancel the router.
I was on the phone for over 3 hours waiting and then when I did get someone, it was someone who spoke English so poorly that I couldn't understand a word that he said.
Not sure how but the next time I called back, I ended up getting someone who spoke English [an American] and he did cancel the order for me.
All was well and good and also he gave me 4 months free internet for my trouble if I'd stay [I was so mad after the 3+ hour wait that I was ready to tell them to forget it and to cancel everything!]
The man said that he'd expidite getting my DSL turned out and that he'd call me the next day [which of course, he never did.]
I called back a few days later [he did give me a number which I barely had to wait at all which I was thankful for.]
At the time I also wanted to re-confirm that the router order was cancelled and she said that yes, she saw it was cancelled but that she also saw where that it was shipped out [this was 3 days after I had cancelled it. Grrrrr!]
I told the girl just to cancel the whole darned thing because I was so mad [I wasn't nasty about it though.]
The lady ended up giving me 30 more days of free internet plus said that they would charge me for the box but once I get charged, to call back and they'd credit the money back to my account.
One reason I wanted to cancel the router because I didn't trust them to take it out in 3 payments like they were supposed to and if they took the full amount out, I would have been in real trouble since my account there is hooked to my checking account.
I was so stressed out worrying about that, that it wasn't funny ... finally my friend lent me $100.00 till the first of October so if they do take the full amount out at once, at least I'll have the money in there to cover it.
So, bottom line is that I did stay with Verizon but when having to deal with those people on the phone - they are so incompetent. Ugh!
All total I got 5 free months of internet at around $21.00 a month, plus will get the $ back for the router for a total of $64.99 so all in all though I was more than frustrated during that week, I still made out in the end.
Their service, I've never had a problem with - it's just dealing with any changes or anything that I have to deal with their people is where my problems come in at with them.
P.S. Wow - sorry, I didn't mean to write a book here. *lol*Last edited by Clutterbug Jen; 09-18-2008 at 10:27 PM.

I've used clearwire for two years without any issues. My contract is almost up and I called to see if they would lower it from the $35 a month I was paying, and they dropped it to $21.98. I had to "sign" another contract though. I don't download a whole lot of stuff.Plus it's faster than the broadband I have at work.
