Murphy came ...
The insulation guys were here and having problems finding where to blow in the insulation. So they did find a few empty spots, did the big empty spots we knew of. But instead of spending 2 days here, they spent half a day. So I'm thinking, well, at least this is going to cost less than I thought. Then, the guy comes up to me and say "Umm.. I think you should see this".
One of our very tall pine trees broke and smashed the neighbor's wood fence and is partly in their pool. Our neighbor has called his insurance company. So we have no idea what will happen in the end. But this neighbor and the other neighbor are now very upset about the pine trees and want the whole single row taken out. When they break, they basically snap in half horizontally. So it is like a 25 foot piece of tree has fallen.
So there is the safety factor - the guy who is the most freaked out happened to be on a ladder working on his house when it came crashing down. If it was any of the other trees, it would have hit one of our houses. We have had one snap in half before - that was an ice storm. Today it is a little windy, no rain.
And then there is the who is going to pay for what in the end. I think 5 out of the 7 are on our property. The previous neighbors split taking a tree down. We had one taken down.
One step forward, two steps back. This sooo wasn't on the list of things to spend money on.

Sorry. Over the years we've had to have alot of trees taken down too but now sleep better knowing that our home is much safer. Last one had a limb fall off & hit our car. the tree looked healthy but it wasn't.
We saved money by having a pro take them down & we did all the work of clean up. It was alot of work but we really saved alot.
Hope you can get a good deal & things settle down.Last edited by Darlene; 09-15-2008 at 02:24 PM.

Ironmaiden: I so feel for you. We had a 75' ash tree blow down this summer and land on the fence between the neighbors and us. We paid for hauling it away as it was definitely on our property to start. But it motivated them and us to cut down some other trees and prune others.
It's expensive, but shop around and get a good deal. I find word of mouth to be the best way to find a reliable guy. Make sure when you get the quote that you ask if it includes stump removal. Or if that's separate. There is a wide range in prices quoted here. We had one guy say $600 to prune one elm. Another guy quoted $225 for it. Go figure. So check around!

That stinks... It's probably safer in the end, but it stinks right now.

Murphy is so rude isn't he? Always showing up where he isn't wanted or needed. I'm so sorry that happened to you!
Thankfully no one was hurt, and it does sound like they need to come down.
