Roll with it baby...
Okay I went and got dhs check and it was $100 less than I budgeted for..will I ever figure out this new raise????
So I went to the grocery and bought my groceries and dog food. I just did my shopping, rounded everything to the nearest dollar and used my 5% off gas coupon.
I had $120 cash and I spent $95!
So now I just need to find $75 and I did. I budgeted in $60 for gas but I still have a little over 3/4 tank from last Wednesday fill up so....
I had the extra needed in my account so we are ok and all the bases are covered..whew!
Now I am only taking and picking up dd from school for the rest of the month to make that gas last! I can do it--no problem.
Does anyone else here have the tendecy to budget to the last dollar which can sometimes lead to unplesant surprises???
Last year I would have freaked..this year I have grown and learned to roll with it and make it work. The math never lies, budget in INK!

I do that, but it is partially because of my OCD issues. I also do it because I can keep better track of what we are spending the money on. We get a little out of control if I don't.

Right when I get the money I pay out. I think I am scared it won't go where it needs to go if I don't. Crazy....but you can't spend what you don't have.....and NO credit cards are not the answer lol!

Glad it worked out for you. I tend to do the same thing, budgeting and then having an unexplained expense or DH having a short notice day off from work and then a smaller check coming in that week. It's enough to drive a person crazy, but like you there was a turning point. I learned to have a little cash stashed for those times and not touch it just incase it was needed. If not, it stayed put. Most importantly, like you, I learned to just shrug my shoulders and know somehow it's going to work out in the end and not stress myself out over it all. Keep rolling with it and making it work for you!

You handled it well!
I try to leave a "cushion" in our checking account cause I always feel like if I budget to the last dollar I'll totally space that we need something...Kace - married to Dh 12 years

Glad it worked out for you and yes, I know just what you mean! My dh gets a base salary plus commission. We never know how much the commission part is going to be since it depends on if the client has paid, then he gets paid. Very hard to budget! I have to wait until he gets his check and go from there because even using approximations has been way off.

Glad you were able to work it all out in the end. My DH's checks are close to impossible to plan for (since his schedule is done on a daily basis, depending on runs available), so I always leave a "cushion" of several hundred in the checking account, for those "just in case" times.

I am where you were last year...NOW!! I panic. My DH is in school and part of my income is commission based. I have an idea how much it will be each month but as someone mentioned above it depends on if the client pays as well. I have left a cushion in my account but Im dying to get the bills paid off as well so its hard sometimes to leave it there...I want to pay down some credit cards to save on the interest...but....Im still building my emergency fund. UGH!!

I am right there with you. I plan right down to the last dollar. I do try to have a little bit left but sometimes that doesnt work.
