Question How safe is your job?

How safe is your job? Is it something that would be in jeopardy if the economy tanks? How stable is the company?

I feel like I am in a safe career (nurse). DH, on the other hand, is a welder and his company fabricates steel beams used in new buildings. So far he is still working 56-60 hours a week, and they haven't mentioned slowing down in the near future.

I really am not sure. DH and I work for a small business that sells spices and meat processing supplies. I actually think our business would remain fairly stable if not increase through difficult economic times. At least in our area, we are seeing more people turn to processing their own meat, doing more hunting and raising their own livestock. All that means more business for us.

That being said, the company has been financially unstable for quite some time due to very poor cash management. DH and I were hired to rectify the situation, but it's hard to erase 10 years of poor choices in a few months.

Dh is our only income. He's completely stable and is working for a stable company. As noted in the other thread...he could literally have a job in a day if he choose to leave this one. He knows people in his field within threee states and has connections to so many areas, plus he has another trade to fall back on. It's not that we *never* have thought about it, but we don't worry about it.

DH works for government. His job is very stable. It will actually be more in demand if the economy worsens.

Well if you asked me this six months ago my answer would have been different but not because of the economy.

My boss announced his retirement so as of Dec. 31, 2008 I will have a new boss who may bring in new people. Not much I can do about it other than keep my resume up to date and network the hek out of people I know.

I'm really not sure. Our company's sales have been at a steady decline for over a year, and yet they have been in business for 40 years and have weathered many storms. We just reorganized to both save space and to better allocate our resources, and now my boss is the owner's son rather than the owner/CEO. It's a little scary because I don't know if he is as good and as fair a person.

I made it through major layoffs here in 2001 when we went from 500 to 100 people, if things get bad I'm hoping there are still enough people here who like me I have a low salary compared to others in my position, so it would be unlikely they would replace me to save money. When it comes down to it, I just don't know what could happen.

DBF on the other hand is probably sitting pretty, he's in one of those positions that will be needed more as the world goes to hell in a handbasket, and the state is having trouble funding the training of replacements as it is.

Thankfully, I have great job security. I'm a paralegal in an extremely large law firms and my practice area is ALWAYS busy. Many of my colleagues are slow at the moment but I've had work up to my eyeballs for well over a year and I know that it will be this way for at least another 12-18 months. Yay!!!

Well I work for a dentist and so far work has been steady for me. We have had more people cancelling their appts. which I think is due to the economy. I don't mind a slow down just don't want to get laid off.

Dh and I are both in college... He's going into the very recession-proof job of accounting/auditing...already has several offers... I'm on the fence what to go with degree-wise...love science (chemistry), but thinking economics would be more secure??? (TONS of gov jobs open, etc.).

    Guess we'll see...

DH has a secure job. He works for a dairy delivering milk. We all need milk so I do not see him getting laid off.
Dh plant was the only plant that the company owns that made any money last year and were approved for there 2 Million Dollar Budget a few weeks ago. So I do not think he is going anywhere.
I work for the school system in the cafeteria and I do not see myself getting laid off as they just added 2 more people to our staff. The kids got to eat so I do not think I am going anywhere.

DH is in the Army, so unless he was medically discharged for some reason, or for disconduct (which won't happen!), we are very secure.

DH works for cable/phone/internet company (A REALLY BIG ONE) & his area of expertise is making the phones for businesses work. Even if certain company went under (which I really don't ever see), he could easily get hired on somewhere else as he is the best in his division (& b4 we got married was offered a job in Atlanta~promotion~ but turned it down b/c he wanted to stay here in Oklahoma (ok yeah, w/us ~ this was before we even began courting)!!

I work in a middle school cafeteria like someone else said...kids gotta eat... so don't see mine going anywhere anytime soon!

I'm a waitress. Watching all these restaurants close ... well, it's terrifying.

However, the company I work for is HUGE and doing pretty well. Yes, we've had our sales go down, but we have the lowest percentage of decline in our district. And, as some have pointed out to me, if other places keep going under, people will have less places to choose from and will *hopefully* come to us. Our restaurant ranks #17 in our region, which is really good. I just hope people are able to afford to keep coming out to eat, and remembering to tip their waitress. LOL. I will say that we've had the highest increase of walk outs in the past month.

My plan is to pay off as much debt as possible this year so I can get my hiney in school. I am also looking for a new job, even though I am still making pretty awesome money, I just don't want to worry anymore.
