Anniversay ideas
My dh and my annv is coming up on the 28th. I was wondering if any of you had any ideas on what to do to make it special. We are on a very tight, tight budget. We live in Iowa so it could be cold. Any ideas, please?

Where in Iowa? I'm in Davenport.
Hubby and I usually go out to eat on our anniversary. It is one of the few times I get lobster. Yum!
You could always make a special dinner, rent a movie and make it a date night in.Jeanne

I'm out of ideas and ours is on the 31st. We usually just take the kids out for trick or treating and get a special dinner.

Well, our anniversary is one thing I usually splurge for. But when we had little kids, I settled for having them go to a sitter or sitter come in and we go out. Don't know if you have kids or not but here are a few things we did...
I made sure DH had a special homemade card on his pillow when he got home from work.
I bring out the linen, china, silverware and crystal...sorry, I was given most of mine, made the linens... anyway, I'd cook a really special meal for us. Not necessarily an expensive one. I tried to aim for DH's favourite dessert. Boston Creme Pie or Black Forest Cake. Often the meals were actually quite simple. DH loves sweet and sour meatballs with rice and veggies. That was a fav.
Then in the evening we'd sip wine and watch a good movie. If the anniversary fell mid-week, we'd look to see what was showing at the cheap theatre and go there (assuming we had a sitter).
If you have kids and they are really young, maybe put them to bed early and you and DH just have a special dessert/time together after they're in bed.
Hope that helps. Let us know what you decide.

For my first Anniversary with DH, money was really tight oo. He loves Hershey's Kisses,so here is what I did:
I decorated a large coffee can with romantic sayings and some (not too girly) ribbon. I filled it with folded up scraps of papers that all started... I Love....
Could have been I love the color of your eyes, I love how you help DS with his homework, or something a bit more
. Then I filled the rest of the space with Hershey's Kisses. He ate all the kisses but the can is still on his bureau!

Hmmm . . . do you have any wineries near you? You could visit a few; I know some give free/very reasonable tastings and wine country near us is very scenic. HTH.

Honestly with things being so tight this year, DH and I simply spent the day together and reminisced about our wedding day. We snuggled on the couch to watch our wedding video together. I told him not to bother buying me anything or even getting me a card. I accidentally bought two cards for him last year, and I was lucky enough to find the spare one on our anniversary, so I did give him one. This was our 3rd anniversary. It was just as special to me as any of our anniversaries so far.

Here is something I did for DH on our first anniversary. It is a little corny, but he still tells people about it, almost 10 years later!
I took construction paper and cut out small hearts. I have no idea how many, but it was enough to cover our entire front door. I copied and printed pictures on our computer for about 1/3 of the hearts and glued them to the hearts. Then for about 1/3 of them, I wrote down the reasons I loved him. Then on the other third, I wrote cute stories or places or dates of significance on them. I put a construction paper sign on the door that said "Happy Anniversary, I love you becuase..." and the hearts had all the reasons I love him. I just taped everything up to the door, so they would be there when he got home from work.
Corny, I know. But he loved the effort that I put into it, and it really didn't cost me much more than some printer ink, construction paper, and some time. He still has all of the hearts in a box on top of his dresser!

Our Anniversary (first) is 11/24. This year, it's the day after 12 yo DD leaves to go to her dad's. So, it will be just him and I. I need to think of what we can do that's cheap also. I don't know if he will still be working at that point either. His job is seasonal - we aren't sure if he will be working around Thanksgiving or even into December.

For New Year's Eve, we always ..
light the fireplace
open a bottle of wine
use the china
have special appetizers - frozen heated up
steak in a brandied cream sauce - see Joy of Cooking
dessert
followed by dessert
Steaks on the grill, frozen jalepeno poppers heated up, a couple of beers or wine.
Candles or fireplace make it special. Sometimes we just do appetizers in front of the fireplace after the kids go to bed.

One of the best "cheap" celebrations my dh and I for our aniversary was a scavenger hunt. I came home to a note on the bed which led me to a friend's house(and babysitter) and another note. I was then led to another friend's house who had my favorite candy bar and a note. I was then sent to a florist who had a single rose and note which led to the park and a note. We had a picnic supper and then we went to the dollar theater for a movie. All told he said the evening was less than $20. It was so much fun and then knowing everyone was in on this made it even more special. Just an idea. Terri

I think simple is better. Dinner with the fireplace on, and a movie with a blanket built for two.
