I agree, they could not have picked a better time to expand. But I disagree with the fact that it is only for recession times. I shopped there all the time.

I don't think they said Aldi is only for recession time, just that it's more popular during tough economic times. I know at our Aldi (that's been here for 15 yrs) I am seeing a new categories of customers shopping there.

I love Aldis and have one in each direction of a 20 miles ride one way. With the price of gas though I dont go. I wish they would put one in our town

We used to have an Aldi's within a 15 minute drive and we shopped there all of the time. Then just as Maytag was closing it's factory in that town, they closed up. It really didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Now we have to drive 40 minutes in the other direction and I do not tend to go that way often so no more Aldi's. With adding in gas, I would have to really figure if the trip would make the prices worth it.

We shop mostly at the commissary since DH is retired Army. But after looking at the ads in the Sunday paper I told DH we needed to check out Aldi's. He works part time at the commissary so he is used to picking up stuff and bringing it home. He has been doing the grocery shopping for the last couple of years so I haven't been paying much attention to prices. However, we are having a "budget meeting" on Saturday and mapping out the plan. So I will be more involved in everything.

I found this statement interesting:
"Deep discounters like Aldi can challenge both conventional supermarket chains as well as Wal-Mart, America's largest grocer. Indeed, Wal-Mart ultimately found it too hard to compete in Germany, where deep-discounters are firmly entrenched, and left."
We are finally getting an Aldi's in our area, well okay, a couple towns over, hopefully sometime in the next few weeks.
It looks completely finished, but just hasn't opened yet, I'm wondering if they are waiting until closer to the holidays?
Even though it'll be about a 40 minute drive for us, it will still work because it'll be opened in the same town that also has Sam's club, and our larger Kroger.
So one trip we can hit all three stores, we usually do our fresh fruits & veggies at Kroger, but I'm really hoping that this Aldi's will have a better selection of fruits & veggies, than alot of other ones that people here have discussed.
I can't wait for it to get here!Michelle in middle Tennessee!
Ever so slowly rebuilding my stockpile...

I am just starting to get into Aldi's. We just recently got one here. Each time I go there I seem to like it a little better.

I love aldi! I have one less than two blocks away! An our Aldi has always been busy, so I haven't really seen that much of big influx of people...? But then again we are in the "poorer" side of town.

I like Aldi, but sometimes they are more expensive then Kroger or the other stores around us. Example boneless skin less chicken breast. Aldi's ad says 2.69lb my frequent stop (Oakridge) has it for 1.99lb. Aldi's is a given for Milk, but I shop everywhere else first.

I definitely don't think of Aldi as just for a recession. The things we buy there because they're cheaper are at least as good, if not better, in quality to what we were buying for more elsewhere and regardless of what state the economy is, it will just never make sense to me to throw my money away.

Unwrapped did a feature spot on Aldi's in their "Cheap Eats" episode. It was nicely done and emphasized the generic products that Aldi's has as its store brand that are usually the same recipe as other brand name products.
I enjoy my visits to Aldi's though BJ's still has the better prices (and is on the way) for most of my perishable weekly items. The Free Spirit Saver who walks the path with Greebo.

I keep hearing about BJ's. Is it like a Sam's club? I know my sister back in PA used to talk about a BJ's but it was run by the Amish and was strictly scratch and dent type stuff with everything being run by generators. Is this the same place? Are they a franchise and the one in my sisters area just happens to be run by Amish?

Berkley and Jensen (BJ's) is a wholesale shopping club like Sam's.
