Laughing at the new KFC commercial
I don't know if everyone has this commercial playing in their area but it makes me laugh everytime it plays. KFC says there is no way you can make their dinner for less than $10 at home. The meal consists of 7 pieces of fried chicken, 4 biscuits and one side order (the one shown is mashed potatoes). They show a mom and her two kids going to the store to price the ingredients. So one kid is shown with five pound bag of flower, asking a store employee where he can find 21 herbs and spices to make the chicken. The mom is shown at one point with a calculator and she just gives up adding since she blew past $10 very quickly. GIVE ME A BREAK! I could go on and on about how dumb this commercial is and how misleading it is for someone who is unfamiliar with the frugal lifestyle. I'm sure that some people would belive this. But really, you don't buy a 5 pound bag of flour for one meal.
I'm sure if any of you could see this you would be doing the math in your head: 2 cups of flour is about ___ cents, 7 pieces of chicken is really only about ____, especially since I got it marked down/on sale, etc, etc. I guess this is a little rant. I'll get off my soapbox and hit the hay, as they say. I think my tiredness is making me punchy
But I would love to see if anyone else has seen this and has similar thoughts.

Here's a link to the commercial. Gotta love YouTube. I didn't see anyone else post about this commercial. OOPS. Sorry!

PS- I love whole foods, but I don't shop there often for obvious reasons. I think that's where our KFC lovin' mom is doing her shopping in this commercial.Last edited by checkerkitty; 11-02-2008 at 08:28 AM. Reason: added link

This commercial bothers me too. I was thinking even if the 7 chicken pieces cost $6 or $7 (which it has cost lately in my supermarket, unless it's marked down for quick sale) then factor in a few potatoes or enough potatoes to make the size side they give you costs a $1 or less and the ingredients to make the biscuits cost less than $1 or even a $1.50 for the biscuits in a can. That's still only $8 or $9 and with that $1 extra you could buy some generic soda pop as a treat and have a meal comparable and healthier than one at KFC for $10 or under. Of course, maybe you would have to figure in the time factor for making all of the food and if you have a coupon to KFC, maybe it would be worth the trip for fast food after a long day at work.
I do find the commercial misleading though, because KFC food is not healthy food and if busy parents don't make the time to plan healthy meals, they could find themselves buying into that theory for other fast food places too. In other words that commercial tells parents it's okay to feed their kids junk food for dinner, because it's the cheaper way to go. Instead of it's the easier way to go and your child will become and stay obese and then hook their future children on the same foods they ate as a child.

Actually this commercial is spot on if you really think of it. If one has nothing in the house, one can not make that meal for $10.
However, One could make 10 of those meals for $100, but can a person who has nothing in their cabinets make that for $10 the answer is no.
What they fail to factor into the commercial is the fact that one has to spend gas and wear and tear on the vechile to pick up said meal. It also does not factor in the cost of the persons time to create the meal.
On the other side, it does not factor in the long term the health implications of eating fried chicken and other fat laden side dishes.

I apply this to taco bell bean burritos, which are my fast food downfall.
Since I use corn tortillas, I actually get more at home than at TB. but I'm a junkie and a treat myself once a month...or less, recently.

They have been showing that commercial here too. It came on the other night, and I told DH it was so untrue. (I see the point about if you don't have the ingredients in the house that it would cost more, but even my sister who is the freezer meal queen could muster enough stuff together to make it!) I told DH that most people could make the dinner for under $10.00 and he agreed. he said we would probably even have leftovers for a day or two! lol! he's so sweet! lol!

I get cracked up at those shows where the family with the (2500 sq ft.)4 bedroom house and 2 small kids want to know what their house is worth, so they can get a home equity loan for a home theater room. That seems excessive to me!

I haven't seen it where we live yet. But maybe I'm not watching enought TV...lol! Thanks, Checkerkitty, for posting the link. It's interesting to watch; however, I agree with the majority of people that with a little planning, brain power and meat department clearance chicken, you can make the meal for under $10.
An obstacle is what comes up when you lose sight of your goal.

this commercial cracks me up every time i see it. the price of anything will go down if you shove enough lard and trans fats in it.
at least if you make it at home you can use REAL food.

I can go to Walmart and get an 8 piece chicken meal already cooked, a can of green beans and some biscuits for much less that $10. That's without making it myself. DUH!

Yep, I live in Canada and it's been playing here. My first thought was: "Anyone from Frugal Village could make it for less than ten bucks!"
Look closely at commercials, with the economic downturn it's the "bell" they're ringing to get people to spend money and buy their products. I've seen the "save money - spend with us" ploy with car commercials, furniture, insurance and other fast food commercials.

Looked up to find that "secret recipe" (well similiar to) .. here is one I found ...
-----ELEVEN SECRET SPICES-----
* 1 tablespoon Rosemary
* 1 tablespoon Oregano leaves
* 1 tablespoon Powdered sage
* 1 teaspoon Powdered ginger
* 1 teaspoon Marjoram
* 1 1/2 teaspoons Thyme
* 3 tablespoons Packed brown sugar
* 3 tablespoons Dry minced parsely
* 1 teaspoon Pepper
* 1 tablespoon Paprika
* 2 tablespoons Garlic salt
* 2 tablespoons Onion salt
* 2 tablespoons Powder chicken bouillon*
* 1 package Lipton tomato cup-a-soup mix
There are actually 11 spices in the above combination, but an additional 3 ingredients were necessary to derive that special flavor. Place all ingredients in blender with on\off speed for 3-4 minutes to pulverize, or rub through a fine strainer. Store in an airtight container so it will not lose potency. Makes about 3/4 cup. To use with flour: Add 1 oz. mix to cup of flour for coating chicken.
