What do you have your thermostat set at?
I've had my heat set to 68 since I moved in. I've heard so many people talking about how low theirs is that I moved it down to 65 last night. It didn't even get that low, but I spent the evening with a heavy shawl around my shoulders and an afghan over my legs thinking I was going to freeze to death...lol.
What do you have yours set at, so I know what to shoot for. And if it's low, what do you do to stay warm?

Ours is set at 65 and yes we do usually do end up wearing sweaters and socks. If you find 68 comfortable maybe take it down only 1 degree and see how that feels to you, also give it some time, it takes a while to acclimate. Eventually, you're going to get to the point where it is just too cold. I don't know about you but if I spend the day cold I always feel like I'm getting sick!

I've been trying to keep my heat set at 60 to 62 degrees during the day and I turn it down to 50 degrees at night. That's a 5 degree drop from the settings I maintained last year. So far, I haven't found the 50 degrees at night to be hard, but it is chilly at 60 degrees in the day sometimes. I wear several layers of clothing, especially when I am on the computer. I'll see if I'm able to maintain the regime when it gets really cold. I will probably start using a little space heater in the computer room when it gets cold.
I often feel colder at the beginning of the autumn than I do in the winter. I seem to become more tolerant of cold the farther into fall and winter it gets.

Ours is set at 59F 90% of the time. It gets bumped up to 62F during bath/shower times (an hour in the AM & again in the PM).
We wear long sleeves, sweatshirts, socks. Normal winter clothes. We don't bundle up in hats & gloves or coats
We also have a woodstove that cuts the dampness out of the air. It is usually 60-64F in the house when we have a fire going.

Last winter we had ours set at 70. I've changed into a more frugal lifestyle lately, and I have mine set at 66. I find that since I'm running around all day, I don't really feel cold. If and when I do, it's usually because I've taken off my socks or put on a tank top. The time of day that I really get cold is from 9 to bedtime. I think it's because I'm relaxing and watching a bit of TV in the basement. A few times last week I went to bed like an ice cube and within minutes fell asleep warm under my covers.
I can't say that I'm going to last the entire winter at 66, but my goal is to beat last years electricity, gas and water bills. It can get really cold where we live with the snow and all (sometimes 20 to 30 below Celcius), and I don't want my family getting sick.An obstacle is what comes up when you lose sight of your goal.

Excellent idea! I think I'll do this. If I'm shivering at normal temps just because I know I turned it down, then I don't think I'm ready to jump down so far yet! Silly mind games.
I think layering is my big problem...I don't have anything I could do that with. I just happened to have gone through a phase of crocheting a couple shawls and stoles, so that's about all I've got. I always used to hate sweaters and sweatshirts! I'll need to visit goodwill or something and see what I can find.Last edited by vigilant20; 11-03-2008 at 10:19 AM.

I have individual baseboards, each with its own thermostat. So far, I have them all off. I am lucky enough to live in an area where it rarely grts below freezing (maybe 5-10 days all winter), but it DOES get into the high 40's and low 50's a lot in winter. I'm trying to hold out and not use the baseboards unless I have company over.
Layering is good. My mother bought me a hideous fleece robe about ten years ago, but I'm actually grateful for it, because I can wear it over just about anything (while I'm in the house), and it is ugly enough that I don't worry about ruining it if I wear it while: feeding animals, collecting firewood, etc.DH aka Mad Hen

We keep the thermostat at 58 6:00 a.m. til 10:00p.m. From 10:00 p.m. til 6:00 a.m. it is set to 50. I am lucky, that my wife and I do not mind the cold. We have sweats on and that seems to be enough.

This year I am striving for 66F during the day and 60F at night. DH is not cooperating though. I come home from work and it is set at 68F and running constantly. It is too darn early to be running constantly!
We are getting a load of firewood and plan on using the fireplace in the family room more this winter in order to keep the heat down lower. We are going through a beautiful Indian Summer. Today's highs are supposed to 76F. I might actually air out the place a little. Down to the 50's for highs from tomorrow on.
We have a programable thermostat but never program it. I think I am going to do that when I get home from work tonight. Gotta start saving some $$Jeanne

DH set the programmable thermostats to 64 during the day and 60 at night.
We all have flannel sheets. Down comforter on DD6's bed, fleece blanket and comforter on DS8's bed, quilt and comforter on our bed.
If I'm moving about 64 doesn't bother me. If I'm curled up on the couch, I get cold.
We'll see if we change it when the kids come home after school.
As far as layering, I've been wearing camisols under my clothes. Also your summer t-shirts can be a layer. I wear slippers all winter long too.

Ours is at 55F. We get the fireplace going when it's really cold. Besides that we dress warmly and also use a small space heater from time to time. The baby's room has a baseboard heater to prevent it from getting too cold in there. We also have a curtain hanging at the end of our hall which divides the main area (living room/kitchen/dining) from the rest of the house making it much easier to keep a comfortable temperature since this is where we spend most of our time. At night we will open the curtain so the heat from the fire can get down the rest of the house. This year we're adding film to the windows to help keep heat in.
This is the second year we've set the temperature so low and it seems we're acclimatizing.
