Me, Myself and I Frugalness- Newbie
Ok! Hello All! I am new to these boards, and new to being frugal. My husband switched jobs 2 months ago, leaving us uninsured. And two weeks ago we had to put the kids in daycare. Killing our budget.Especially this week. Had to take Oldest to the doctor and get meds. So while I am enjoying the time at home with him, I have been reading the boards. And yesterday I started helping myself to be more frugal. Yesterday I made homemade noodles, boiled and deboned chicken. Froze the meat and the broth. Seperated and cooked some hamburger, froze for future meals. Diced and sliced a grocery sack of onions given to me by my grandma and froze them. Today I am making rolls, bread, and noodles - all ingredients I had in the pantry. So, I am making progress I think.
I have a question - I have two small bananas that are almost done with. Can I freeze those to make banana bread? I don't think there is enough there to make a batch yet. ??? Thanks for your help!

I freeze bananas all the time, just toss them in. Just beware, they are very hard and hurt your feet when they come hurtling out of the freezer door. Normally, I peel them and place in a quart ziploc bag and just add bananas as they go to the other side as I hate the way they fly out of the freezer from time to time and the fact that they don't stack well in the freezer, they seem to move about a lot more in the peel.
Welcome to FV and enjoy your quest to become more frugal.

Hi there,
Welcome aboard!
For a newbie you are a very good starter. When I see them on sale (.29 per lb.) I buy and freeze them. Like a lady said, peel them and place them in a Zip bag.
I make my banana bread and smothies.
Good luck!

Welcome aboard! Go ahead and freeze those bananas. They make good muffins and banana bread. If they aren't too brown when you pull them out of the freezer, you can zap them for a minute in the microwave and toss them in the blender to make a smoothie with other fruit too. I brush my bananas with Fruit Fresh (dissolved in water) or lemon juice to prevent browning, but some people claim their bananas don't brown significantly in the freezer. I too use a ziploc bag to store them in.

You can also use frozen bananas as an egg substitute in a muffin or quick bread recipe - just use ~1/4 cup mashed banana.

Have you looked into your state's SCHIP program? It's designed for children whose parents make too much to qualify for Medicaid, but can't afford health insurance. In many states even if you are above the cutoff, you can buy into the program for the kids at reasonable rates. I tried to post a link, but apparently haven't posted enough to be allowed! If you google SCHIP, you can find more info.
