Wholesale Club must buys?
Hi all

I am going to a wholesale club tomorrow (BJs) and will be buying yeast for baking and a few other things but I know alot of the club items arent a real bargain
Any tried and true recommended purchases at a wholesale store over a regular supermarket?
Thanks!

We *used* to live near a BJ's, these are some of the things that I bought there regularly:
big bags of stir fry veggies
milk
eggs
cheese
frozen pizzas
hamburger
butter quarters (these will freeze, until you need them)
chips
big bags of rice
" " " sugar
tea bags
coffee (if you drink it)
cocoa
hot chocolate mix
pasta
big bags of flour tortillas (these can be frozen as well)
spices
big 'ole bottles of stir fry sauce (I can't remember the name, but it was soooo good-comes in a glass bottle)
kitty litter
toilet paper
paper towels
ziploc type baggies
garbage bags
I'm sure that I've forgetting a few things since it's been almost a year since we last shopped there.
But yeah, there were quite a few things that we bought on a regular bases.Michelle in middle Tennessee!
Ever so slowly rebuilding my stockpile...

Our BJ's had dirt cheap lunchmeat (deli). You can freeze it too.

I buy the commercial size cans of chickpeas, it comes out to be cheaper than dried and we eat a lot of chickpeas. I don't find bargains there on our other staples, so I go a few times a year with a friend to buy a chickpea stockpile.

Pasta! We load up on it, it comes out to being so cheap when you buy 8 pounds, lol! They have whole grain pasta, as well as the regular kind.
We also get canned tomatoes (diced, paste, etc), sometimes Campbell's soup, all our ground turkey, and often whole chickens. Look for specials on meat, they have that a LOT and you can really save.

know your prices some things like cereal cost more
milk is not a good deal for us and meat is high but for high quality
Also we find that a large box meant the boys ate it fast so no savings for that treat in the long run
diaper wipes are a great price rice ,yeast spices are good but only if you can share with several people who uses that much in a year?Meg
cc debt free YEAH on to the mortage

I think I can consider Real Canadian Superstore to be more of a wholesale store than a supermarket. So here are the things I buy that are more tried and true in club packs than buying them single:
1) Liquid handsoap (I get at least three full refills of the pump bottle, saving about $5 or more...the pump bottle is about $2.75 and the refill bottle is about $1.99)
2) Meat (I buy my chicken and ground beef in bulk, especially when it's on sale)
3) Coffee creamer (I buy Club Pack containers that hold about 1.4kg in them for $5.98. If I buy the 400ml container, I pay about $3.00.)
4) Cereal (I recently bought a Club Pack of generic honey nut cheerios for $7.74 and it comes with two bags. If I buy it separately, I can pay around $4 per box.)
5) Toilet paper and paper towels
6) Pudding (a 4-pk of pudding costs about $1.50, a Club Pack of 4 4-pks runs me $3.98)
7) Salad dressing (If I buy the Club Pack size, it's about two of the normal size and is only about a dollar more expensive. So if the Club Pack is $2.77 and the normal size is $1.75, I save.)
I decided that for now on, if it came in a larger container and I already had a smaller one, I'd buy the Club Pack container and find a way to store the rest of it. This applies to stuff like ketchup, mustard, cooking oil, sugar, etc.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

You do really have to pay attention to the prices! It gets sticky sometimes!
My favorite deal there is the Cliff Zbars for Kids. They're $10.50 for 24 bars. CHEAP for an organic, prepared snack. And, it's what I usually have for breakfast while I'm running out the door.
I can also usually get some good deals on fruit and milk. The Orowheat 100% Whole Wheat bread is a pretty good deal too. I usually buy 6 loaves and freeze them.
I need to check out the flour, sugar, etc. next time I'm there. I don't do much from scratch because I work full time, but I'm trying to get better!

HI everyone and thanks! You are right-you have to know your prices. I found ALOT of things there that are cheaper at the grocery store than the wholesale club.
But I did get some great deals on yeast, montreal steak seasoning, peanut butter and bread/rolls. Worth the trip!
