dh and frugal ideas
Some of you may know I am having a year stockpile challenge and that the whole concept was a little confusing to my dh.
Well he has been coming along and understanding it a little more about what I am attempting to do along with savings, debt reductions, budget etc. It all ties in together.
So that is good news.
Now yesterday he informs me he wants to stockpile charcol and lighter fluid...okay fine and then he informs me he wants to use our points and buys a 5000 whatever generator and 5 shakeup no batteries flashlights with radios.....at the turn of about 1000 points.
He said we are in for another bad winter and he doesn't want us to be without electritcy again like last time.
I just decided to go with it and tell him if he feels so strongly we need to do this then okay so he ordered them.
I guess my dh is onboard more than I thought.
Does anyone else have a spouse/partner that thinks of things you never would have considered but at the same time are indeed things that help the frugal lifestyle.
Frankly I would have used the points for a new puter but I guess a puter won't keep you warm during an ice storm!
next points=new puter! lolLast edited by Cricketlegs; 11-09-2008 at 01:06 PM.

I think it's great that he's getting along in his frugality. My DH is usually on par with me but sometimes we don't see things the same way.
We are both thinking we need a much larger garden this coming year. We've also made a want list - expensive things. New stove (need one) cause this one has been here since DH was 3 and he's 22 now. He broke part of it when he was 5 also. We will get one - if we have to with the tax refund. We also need to do house repairs. We will do most of it ourselves as we can.
Maybe you can come up with $ and buy a new computer on Black Friday. I see some of the ads are gonna be decent.

My DH is pretty much on board with what we do. But we have been doing frugal things for over 16 years so he knows the drill.
I have a question for anyone who can answer it. I always have a stock pile of food in the pantry. I like to have one or more of whatever we may need waiting so I don't have to run out and buy it at whatever price it is for sale when I need it. So, now I have 7 jars of spaghetti sauce because we use one or two a week. etc. What is the point of having a one year (or 6 month or 3 month) supply of everything?
I am not criticizing at all. Just curious.

I think the point of having a 6 month or 1 yr supply is that they could go without buying if something happened and they couldn't afford food. I know Mormons are supposed to have a 1 yr supply of food, not sure what else. I like to have a few months to 6 months worth but that hasn't been happening lately. I am working towards it again but DH will be laid off from work and I will be scraping by.

To me, my stockpile and supplies are considered insurance.

In case you are out of work or your income drops for an extended amount of time (like teachers during the summer, construction workers, people who know a strike or a layoff is coming). Sometimes, it is just for survivalist reasons. Sometimes, a religious reason (their belief system tells them to keep that much around).

My DH has always been on board as far as just about anything I do that helps same us money. He sometimes has better ideas than I do. The only thing he doesn't get is my need to buy stuff just because it's a money maker (like Diabetes monitors - we donate them now).

My DH is on board. He sent me an article a few years ago about 'food banking', essentially starting a stockpile. You bank food the way you'd bank cash against harder times. He's also the one who goes around turning off lights in empty rooms, lol!
I have a 3 month 'food bank' (or stockpile if you prefer) to get us through those times when DH isn't employed, like right now. It was all bought at reduced prices. With no money coming in, we need to preserve what cash we have to pay utilities, gas for the car, etc.

Thank you all. Now I understand it a bit. I stockpiled about 3 months worth of food last Spring for the summer when DH may not have work. I think that I will do it again for summer. I don't think a year is easy for me to do since I have a teen aged boy that eats everything in sight! Hard to keep 2 weeks in the house sometimes.

Not to mention that you can stockpile your supplies at the rock bottom price and the amount you buy can take you through to the next time you find a rock bottom price. That way you NEVER end up paying for anything for less than the rock bottom price!!

Glad you got your DH on board and yes, sometime 2 heads are better than 1. My husband just re-arranged my stockpile for me.

Hi there,
I am so glad you posted this thread, because I was going to start a new thread about the same topic. Seriously how do you involve you dear husbands in Frugal living.
Being patient? Give him the shopping list ( I asked him to buy some spices, well he spend $70.00 and I am sure spices will last for another 5 years)?
I have a huge problem in this department. We got married almost 3 years ago, I used to be a single mom, DH no money worries, no responcibilities with big spending habbits. I like doing my menus, budget, use coupons, putting on a c/card to get airmiles, etc, he is like from different planet. I can see some of improvement in being practical, (he is big meat eater), but now he eats lots of vegetables, fish (we did fish during the summer).
Any ideas, suggestions?
