How Can a Couple Eat Well on a 50$ Week Menu
I was using the Stumble Toolbar to surf the net when I came across this website:
http://www.christonium.com/culinaryr...12063898837254
It has a broken out menu with cost analysis of how to eat for 25$ a person.
Thought it might help someone on the challenge!
Whoops--just read some of the comments down at the bottom--apparently it may not be the best representation of a healthy, balanced diet.Last edited by McD; 11-17-2008 at 07:19 PM.

I have managed it very well, AND I am ahead on my budget right now!! I expect to go over my $300. for the month of november, however, I am working and making menu's for the entire month to be able to get as close to it, if not right on the mark as I can!!Proud wife to Randy

The diet they are on wouldn't work for me just because I really like to eat a lot of fruit in the morning. However, compared to what most people eat it seems pretty healthy.
We spend a lot less than $50/week for the two of us, but we buy almost no meat plus we get a lot of produce free. We often get bread and bagels free as well. Making up for those savings we do buy organic butter (expensive). So the weeks when I stock up on organic butter on sale I spend almost $50 just on that!
With food, like many things, time can be substituted for money. If you make soup from scratch and bake your own bread and things (NOT from a mix) you can save a lot of money and get excellent quality food. Plus food being fresher makes it taste better as well.

Angel Food Ministries (angelfoodministries.com) is very helpful to the budget. For $30, you get a box of food that will feed a single person for a month with a few supplemental items. There are no income guidelines and very little paperwork. They also take food stamps.
I didn't think this article portrayed a healthy diet. It was almost devoid of fruit.

I think the list is fantastic. Only one person commented that it seemed unhealthy, and I disagree. It looks pretty healthy to me. I'm going to have to try this.

That's a good link! Thanks for posting it. There are some interesting articles in the right hand side bar too, like ingredients that make recipes more expensive, or how much a typical home made sandwich costs,

Thanks for the link! I think that if people really sit down and think about home made ideas for breakfast/lunch/dinner they can survive on 25$/per week per person! And you don't have to eat beans/rice with/for every meal!

It sounds reasonably healthy. I think it's very doable.

More power to those who can follow this plan. This would not sit will with the fiancee. While he loves his rice and beans, I do not see a whole lot of meat and he is carniverous! Even I would be hungry following this - where are the snacks & fruit ???

Interesting. My nutritionist would not even consider this plan. It is entirely too light on fruits and veggies. I am to have at least 6-8 1/2-1 cup servings a day of those. I don't see that in this meal plan. She would also be going on about whole grains vs. processed grains.
I do see a lot of carbs and sugars (do people honestly eat 1/4 c. of maple syrup on pancakes in one meal?!). No doubt this menu plan would suit the 'average' person, but then the 'average' person is obese in North America...as am I...which is why I've been told to eat more fruits and veggies and less carbs.
JMHO...sorry folks...I just don't agree this is a healthy diet...
But, having said that, DH and I are currently eating a healthy nutritionist approved diet for under $320cdn/mth. (that's $260US). Works out to $80cdn/week, or $63US/wk. With tweaking we could get it below $50US/week, but it would probably include finding a way to get cheaper meat, or growing a garden.

Dh and I eat very well on about 60.00 per week. And we eat a TON of fresh fruits and veggies. There is virtually no meat in this menu, which would not work here. That menu looks extremely bland and boring compared to ours. Everything is brown!!! I suppose it would work for some....just not for us.

It's definitely doable to someone that wants to stay within their budget. The ideas will certainly help out those looking to keep their grocery spending under control.
....isn't that stumble tool bar just so darn addicting. I can't stop using it.
