I agree with Jeanna. Just go ahead and get it! A friend of mine didn't have renters insurance and the owner (on the first floor) had a fire and she lost everything! She had to start all over, had no place to stay and only had the clothes on her back. It was horrible! Get it!!

I just sometimes feel like I am the ant and he is the grasshopper. I am always looking toward the future and he is always about the here and now. I just wish that sometimes I could just forget about the what ifs and be a little crazy sometimes. Not to crazy just a little.
Its not always fun to be the one incharge all the time.Katy

Thank you to everyone who's commented on the importance of renter's insurance. There's nothing for me to add, and I'm a BIG proponent of it!
You aren't the one in a bubble, darlin - your hubby is living in a bubble if he thinks you don't need Renters insurance or a 401k.
I hope you can find a way to wake him up, cause right now he's acting like a boy in denial, not a man.Last edited by Greebo; 12-11-2008 at 05:29 AM.
If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Normally I would not say this but in this case ..... Do it anyways. Just do it and don't say a word. It won't cost you anything so it's not like your spending money without his permission.
Just think if something happened he would be so glad you did.

my husband dragged his feet on his 401k and back then they matched. It drove me crazy. I nagged until he finally did it, but even then I took over 5yrs for him to do it. He was 28 then and now he's 40. He finally admits to me that he was foolish. They aren't lying that you need to prepare early. His current job doesn't even have a 401k program so we have IRAs. We can't afford much towards ours, but every bit counts in the end. Renters/Home Owners insurance is a MUST.

When I was in college I somehow found out about rental insurance and got some. It was incredibly cheap for the coverage.
We are landlords now, we advise all of our tenants to get rental insurance. They think the landlord has insurance, but that is only on the building. We had a situation where the upstairs tenant installed a window A/C very poorly and water built up in the ceiling. The water finally came through the ceiling and it all crashed down onto the downstairs tenant. It was chaos and mess all over their nice furniture, and nobody's insurance covered it. The upstairs tenant had been there forever and was very nice, which is the only reason we didn't sue her for the damage she inadvertently caused.
There is no reason not to have renters insurance, it is so cheap. Otherwise you can lose all your possessions and get nothing. It is tough to always be the grownup, so I would advise you to also go out drinking with your girlfriends. :-)

thanks everyone for reponding. We have made a lot of stupid money choices in the past and I am trying to make better ones.
One of the smart things I did was get a 401k. My dad told me the first time you work somewhere that offers a 401k get one. Its not much but at least it is start.
I control the money and while I ask for options I handle all the money and what we do with it.Katy
