Your local library
Has anyone else noticed the increase in users at your local library? I have. I'm glad to see it to be honest.
My mom lives in Southern Arizona and has lived in her town for maybe 5 years. I asked here a few months ago if she checked out stuff from her library and she didn't even have a library card! I was shocked. I told her to go check it out. Well, she did and has been using it a lot. She called me this week and said she had to park on the street because every single parking spot in the lot was full!

Ours is usually pretty quiet, but I have noticed it's been busier that usual, especially during the weekdays. The computers are always full, I have been wondering if it is people who are out of work, using the computers. I get kind of sad when I think about it.
What I have noticed is that our libaray staff has increased big time! There used to be pretty much, 4 librarians. One working the adult desk, one working the kids desk and one stocking shelves in each section. But now, whenever I go in there, it seems like there are at least 10 people working at any given time! So I'm guessing their patronage has increased in order for them to be adding staff like that!

The usage at ours has increased. People can't afford to buy books so they are borrowing them. Heck even usage is up at Bookmooch.com.

We went to the library in this area yesterday (just moved not that long ago) and it is SO SO busy! But, I don't think it's any different than normal. I've been in it a couple times in the past and it was super busy than also.
If usage is not up at libraries... I bet it will be in no time.

I haven't been to our library in awhile so I'm not really sure, but it was always fairly busy. I'm stopping by later on today, so I'll know for sure later on.

Yes, I talked to the librarian of one of our local branches and he says circulation and business in general has gone up this past 6 months. Course, they still have dead times, but overall the trend is up.

I have noticed an increase... our library is small so a few extra bodies milling around is very noticable. This is great news because we are working for an expansion that would move the children's library to the new annex and create more space for the adult books in the existing area. The more circulation/users the faster this project will get completed!
ETA: I went to college with a man from Africa who told me he wept the first time he stepped into a library. He just couldn't believe that all the knowledge was there, free for the taking for anyone who wanted it. I still think of him and it makes me extremely grateful.Last edited by elphie; 01-11-2009 at 11:34 AM.

I've noticed the one I go to in a bigger town is fuller but not our itty bitty one here. What I do see is the banks of computer (ok 4, LOL) are always full of kids. The one I go to in a bigger town has a calculator to show how much you're saving using the library which I thought was neat.http://www.wellscolibrary.org/LUVC2.htm

The area I live in doesn't see much library use in general. I haven't noticed more cars in the lot recently. It is mainly geared toward high school students and does not carry a large variety of adult reading other than a few best sellers. Every single time I have wanted something I have had to order it in from another branch or another library system.

I haven't noticed much of a change in how many people I see at my library. I live in a bigger town and it always seems to be busy. I am happy to say that for all of 2008 I only spent 25 cents on books. I used to purchase books every month. Last year I vowed to only borrow books. The 25 cents was a late fee for being one day over due. I'm glad it was only one day
.
My mom joined her library this year and loves it, she ran out of room for books in her space too and she has enjoyed borrowing books for her and my grandmother this last year. She hadn't belonged in years, because you used to have to go in and browse around. When I told her how you can go online and place a book order she became hooked!

Its been a long time since I have been to our library..They had a perfectly nice building and they built this monstrous building!!..It is hard to find anything and they have fewer people working there than before, so I tend not to use it..
