Dh doesn't work on the road, but he does work 24 hour shifts. I generally pack food for him. He will on occasion eat out as he isn't always in the station for long periods of time. He has to eat when he can. They don't get lunch breaks.

My husband works Monday thru Friday in Chicago. So we do a combination of I send some food and he goes shopping. He rarely eats out, maybe 2 times a week. He rents a room with a refrig and microwave. We have been during this for 2 years. He rarely spends more than $40 a week! The worst part for us is been separated all this time.

I am a firm believer in packing lunch. The best thing you can do is invest in a GOOD insulated lunch bag or small cooler and a few ice packs. This past summer I spent $15 on a "personal cooler" from LLBean. Its a good size for me but it might be a bit small for a "man". I don't know how much the next size up is but whether you go with the one I'm talking about or not, just get a good one, you may even be able to find one at Goodwill or a consignment shop.

anyway...you can Google for lunch box ideas and I'm sure you'll have plenty to choose from.

Savingdinner.com has a great article on how to pack a healthy lunch.

I haven't bought lunch in over 9 months. There is always something available to take for lunch even if its the 'ol standby PB&J.

When my fiance and I first got together he was an OTR truck driver. I was on the truck with him for 6 months. He had a small fridge/freezer and a microwave on the truck. We usually ate one meal a day in a restuarant. We bought food and drinks at Walmart for our other meals. Having food on the truck came in handy many times because there were some places he went to that didn't have a restuarant or store within miles and if he didn't get dispatched quickly he spent many nights in the parking lot of some little rinkydink business and no truck stop near by.

my DH is an OTR truck driver and I send some food with him. Because of company regulations he isn't able to have a portable fridge with him anymore, but he keeps a small electric cooler with him. This keeps drinks cool, but we don't trust it for most other things (the temp varies too much imo). I send things like pop tarts, crackers, peanut butter, small cans of fruit in juice, and some "just add water" mixes (he gets hot water from inside the truck stops in the coffee area). Not the cheapest or healthiest things in the world, but beats eating at McDonald's 3 times a day. He usually does end up eating 1 hot meal a day while out, but his fuel rewards usually pay for several of those a week, so that helps too.

My hubby isn't, but my Dad was for a while.

He had a fridge/cooler type thing in his truck that you plug into the cigerette lighter. He was usually gone about 2 weeks at a time and rarely ate out. When he was home my Mom would make him meals(the same as we would eat at home), put them in tupperware and when he was done he would wash it in bathroom sinks. He also loved his fresh fruit and veggies and would shop for those when he was home. He also took all our leftovers (spaghetti, grilled chicken, whatever).

ETA: My Mom also saved old jugs and when he came home she would brew a bunch of tea for him to take and fill some with water. He would sometimes buy H. punch at a Wal_mart though.

Will he be staying in a hotel? My mom's always on the road. She's a teamster and when she travels she brings a crock pot with her, she always has an electric stove type thing to boil water and she brings an electric griddle with her too. She can make everything right in her hotel room but this will all depend on where your husband is staying. I can give her a call today and she if she has any other suggestions!! Peace & Love!!

My other half works 4 days a week (W-Sa). He starts at 6:30am and gets home whenever he is done for the day... anywhere from 8pm-2am.

He gets a big breakfast at home before he heads out. On Wednesday he rides with a partner and they usually stop at fast food. He gets dollar menu deals.

The other three days he brings a sandwich. -- The bulkie roll is put in a separate baggie and the 'meat' is double bagged and placed in a Rubbermaid thermos. I buy the big bag of individual SunChips for snack. One package lasts about 2 weeks.

In winter, he just tosses 2 cans of iced tea (his fav) in his van.

In summer... we break out 'the big boy cooler' and his 'meat thermos' goes in the cooler, along with a gallon of water and a few bottles of Gaterade-type drinks.
I can't be out of money... I still have checks left!
