Hey all you grocery challenge folks
I was reading the latest issue of Bacwoods Home and they have several articles on cheap eating. Their idea of cheap was $6.50 a plate and $200.00 per person! Thought about writing their editor and calling them a bunch of pansies but.......... I'll be nice. Thought you folks who've been doing fine on $25.00/person/week would appreciate it

GOOD GRIEF! $6.50 a plate - please pass the lobster and steak!
Here's a menu plan I followed when I was first married (early 1970's), along with the cost. It might prove entertaining in comparison. The number of calories for the day were around 2,000.
Breakfast: - 19-cents
1/2 grapefruit
1 soft-cooked egg
1 slice raisin bread
beverage
Lunch: - 35-cents
Spinach Salad
1/2 c. cottage cheese
4 radishes
1 slice whole wheat bread
1 small banana
beverage
Dinner: 98-cents
Tomato juice
Oven Pot Roast
1/2 c. cooked noodles
Dill Cabbage-Carrot Slaw
1 small apple
beverage
Snacks: 36-cents
2 c. skim milk
1 small orange
--------------------
Breakfast - 15-cents
1/2 c. orange juice
2/3 c. cooked oatmeal
1 c. skim milk
beverage
Lunch: 58-cents
Ham sandwich
carrot sticks
celery stalks
1 small pear
beverage
Dinner: 60-cents
Italian Baked Chicken
1/2 c. cooked green beans
1/2 c. cooked sliced carrots
1 mixed green salad/dressing
Broiled grapefruit
beverage
Snacks: 35-cents
2 c. skim milk
1 small apple
1 tangerine

I'm not on the challenge, but I just figured my per meal cost to $2.90US...which works out to $1.45 per person. And we don't eat rice and beans! Hmmm... $6.50/plate would be a real luxury item here!...yep...bring on the steak and lobster!

I agree! We could (and sometimes do) eat really well for much less than $6.50/plate! Who knows? Maybe their plates are really big!
