I love reading what people spend on food. It's the one area we really have control over, because a person can eat pretty cheap if they want to & are smart about it. It does take a bit of work though, as we all know.

The $500.00 a week family may be misleading you, because you can buy all kinds of stuff at the store that isn't food. We have several "grocery " stores that sell everything under the sun. Pet food & supplies, clothes, toys, garden supplies, paint, you name it.The wife may be pulling the wool over her DH's eyes as well...

There are plenty of expensive things they could be buying. Top of the line everything would be my guess - expensive cheeses, nuts, some seafood can be very expensive, fresh pastas, specialty rices instead of plain old rice, artisan breads, that sort of thing. But that's definitely a pretty impressive total.

They should join FV and participate in the unfrugal spending thread. It would make all of us feel ever so much better about our own lapses.

Actually it could be easy to spend that if you shop at Whole Foods, or have expensive tastes.

Ooh like if I was buying my Reypenaer VSOP cheese ($30 a POUND), those lovely jumbo shrimp they have ($22lb), their premade sushi ($17 for a tiny box), Fair Trade shade grown organic coffee ($15 lb), butter from Ireland ($6 for 8oz), organic whole chicken ($22), no nitrate organic bacon ($8 for 10 oz), artisan bread ($5), etc....

It adds up FAST that way!

that's practically our entire budget. Rent, utilities, food, insurance, etc. is all right around $500 a week.

They must make a LOT of money to be able to afford to spend that much at the grocery store. Either that, or your husband misunderstood and that $500 is a monthly amount.
