Would you still be frugal if you were a millionaire?
I thought about this question the other day and wanted to ask it here.

I feel that I will still be frugal so I won't go overboard with spending like crazy.Last edited by PinkWolf; 04-05-2009 at 08:23 PM.

yea i think we would still be frugal...it's kinda 'in-grained' in us and even now we could live a little 'less' frugal but we choose not to....
though dh likes to constantly say to me "we are NOT poor...we do we keep trying to live like we are" ? coz..if we didn't....we WOULD be.... so there.....

Definitely. I would use the money to not have to work for the rest of my life and help my family instead of living high off the hog.

I think at first I would buy all the things I needed, like a house, and whatever at that point, pay off all my bills, but then I would want it to last as much as possible so I wouldn't have to worry about working or whatever ever again! So yes, I think I would be frugal to an extent!

I would like to continue the frugal lifestyle; however, I know DH wouldn't want any part of it. He and I once discussed this and I remember that frugal living didn't seem to be in his vocabulary. I would like the security of knowing that I have no mortgage, all my bills are paid off, lots of money is put away for our girl's education and weddings and lots of money is put away for DH and my retirement. I've never been one to deliberately waste money.
An obstacle is what comes up when you lose sight of your goal.

I'd most likely live frugally. We'd end up retiring somewheres nice, but purchase the house/land when it's the cheapest. I'm a real homebody, so it's not like I'd be out spending money on frivilous things that I wouldn't need. I mean, if I have control now with having a few hundreds extra each month, why wouldn't I have that control if I had a few million in the bank?

Just a million?
Yes, I would still be as frugal as I am now. $1M dollars isn't as impressive as it once was. 2 bedroom houses in my town (that aren't fixers) are 300+. We would pay off my car, but cars eventually need to be repaired or replaced. There would always be something that needs to be fixed or re-purchased.
DD will need tuiton (she's currently talking about attending Tufts University - Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine) :faint: She isn't even 9 yet
A wedding may be in distant future (staying open-minded).
That is not to say we wouldn't secure our 'old age' expenses... and we would definitely take the family cruise we have been daydreaming about... and it would be done frugally... doesn't matter if you sleep in an owners suite or a regular room... you still get to the same place at the same time.Last edited by Lady_V; 04-05-2009 at 09:02 PM.

Yes, for the most part we would still be frugal. The only benefit I see of being a millionare is being able to afford to give more to charity. I always that it would be cool to be like that secret santa person, that was giving random strangers cash. Or the guy I remember hearing about that paid for random peoples gas one day at a gas station. Hoping that money invested wisely would keep my own children from having to struggle financially would also be a major plus for me.

Absolutely.
It's definitely a way of life for me. I want to be of the "use less, do more" mindset and not be wanton or wasteful.

I would still be frugal. Maybe not as much as I am now, but I wouldn't be wasteful in my spending either.

Most definitely. I hate to see waste and over indulgence.
DH talk about if we ever won the lotto (don't see how we would win since we don't play but...). We would build our own house -- all energy efficient and off grid. I would have a little garden area, a large pantry and home canning supplies -- that kind of thing.

I certainly wouldn't become wasteful. I see no need to pay for cleaning products that are harmful to the environment AND expensive when vinegar is just as easy, greener, and cheaper. I would still reuse breadbags and refrain from using paper towels and paper plates.
But I would most certainly go on more vacations, hire a housekeeper to come in once a week and do all of the jobs I don't like, and would buy my favorite ice cream even if it wasn't on sale.
And I know we all say $1M isn't what it used to be but my dh would have to work for nearly 30 years at his current salary to earn that much. If we had 30 years wages up front we could work when we wanted, doing what we love and any money earned from that, coupled with the interest we make, would still allow us to keep our current standard of living, continue saving and growing our money, and have some money for extras we currently can't afford. Working on your own terms and having a few extras; I'd say it's quite a lot.

We would become debt free.... and Greebo could cut back on his hours to develop his plans to conquer the world one rental property at a time. But I think the frugal mind set is with us to stay.
I would still work and garden and learn to be as self sufficient as I possibly can.

I'm frugal to the core. Million$ wouldn't make all that much difference - other than we'd have more money to give.
