My wife and I are buying a house and there is no dishwasher and there is no room for a dishwasher. We have decided that a dishwasher is a necessity for us because we absolutely hate doing the dishes and right now in our apartment the sink is constantly overflowing with dishes..
we looked into a portable dishwasher, but they were listed around $500 a piece.. then I stumbled upon tabletop dishwasher and I was curious as to what others feel about these devices. there is a link above to one we are considering.
It uses less water and power than a regular dishwasher and can be put on the counter next to the sink..

Story of my life. In 2007 we had 78000 worth of debt, and we climbed out under it, on top of paying for a surgery with cash, bought a house, had a foundation shift and $11000 in repairs later we are good to go.. then I hear the words "I'm pregnant!"

I had one once, but sold it in a yard sale a few year back.
Honestly, the time it took to load and unload a dishwasher that really only washed maybe 4 plate settings at a time, wasn't worth it. Easier and faster just to do the dishes by hand.
If you really must have one, go with the portable dishwasher, yes it's more pricey but will serve you better in the long run.Last edited by Denvergirlie; 06-01-2009 at 10:20 AM.

Also take into consideration how much cooking you do and how many dishes you dirty while cooking. My Hubby and I love to cook and although we have three children even the meals that we cook when the kids are off at grandma's use a lot of dishes. We would never be able to fit them in that small dishwasher. Most of my pots don't look like they'd fit then add the plates, cups, and utensils forget it. I'd still end up doing them by hand or having to do a second load.

We have a tiny one now.. a little Danby countertop. It is surprisingly annoying. I mean it has to be hooked to the sink via hoses and it sits on the countertop near the sink, sounds ok... BUT
When you unhook it the stupid hoses drain water all over the place and there really isn't anywhere to "store" the hoses, so they're always in the way.
Also, while you can easily wash plates, soup bowls etc in it, and they do get clean.
You MUST pre-rinse every dish, spoon, spatula etc. There's no normal drain mechanism to take away even the smallest food crumbs. They end up blown upwards into the glasses and cups.
And anything over the size of the smallest sauce pan just won't fit. You'll end up hand washing all of them anyway, from salad bowls, to serving platters, to grill pans, frying pans, and spaghetti pans. You know, all the really gross stuff.
You'll notice that I have not said they don't work. They do.. on some things, under very specific conditions, and they're really quite energy efficient about it.
We're giving up and going to get a full sized one! It's driving us nuts.Last edited by Thevail; 06-02-2009 at 12:47 AM.

Thanks for the input.
We went on craiglist and found a mid size portable dishwasher for $125. Wife is loading it up right now. We're having issues getting it to attach to the sink in our crappy apartment (seems no matter what we do there is always leaking backflow) but the unit appears right now to be doing its job.
It's about half the size of a normal dishwasher and we'll see how it works.. but it sounds like it is doing its job..

at the hardware store you can buy a better sink spout to attach too, we had to do this, the one as provided was junk, but $5 at Home Depot fixed it right up.
