Ahhh my dryer is broken!
DH goes to work and I go to put clothes in the dryer. I push the button and well, it doesn't start. I go check the fuse box and reset the fuse, but that doesn't help. It doesn't do anything!

I have no clothes line either and I have two wet loads of clothes sitting in my basement. DH is at work until like four o'clock and we can't afford another dryer right now. Superstore doesn't even sell a clothes line assembly kit that I know of. I'm stuck putting things on hangers for now.

I wish.

DH doesn't know how to do much of anything around the house, so it's either saving up for a new one and getting outdoor/indoor racks until then... or putting the dryer on credit and being back in the hole again.
I'll have to walk to Superstore and see if they have the ones I can dry the socks/underwear on for now and hang up the bigger clothes on the metal pole downstairs. The problem is that DS10 has a habit of bedwetting and with the forecast calling for rain on Tuesday and Wednesday, plus all day today, it's rough for bigger blankets.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

~Aww that's a bummer!
For what it's worth, I've been dryer-less for 8 months now. It's an adjustment hanging everything around the house in wet weather(and I have just 800 sq ft!). And it's an inconvenience. I almost caved and bought one in May for $400(cheapest delivered)but now I'm glad I didn't.
Definitely get a drying rack or two if you can. I have an indoor one that can hole 12 large items in 4 feet of floor space. I set it up in front of the closet in my bedroom since it's the most out of the way space. Pant hangers are very useful for indoor drying as well.
Do you have any two trees or a tree and a building that you can stretch a length of clothesline between?~
Edited to add that I drape socks over regular wire hangers(about 5 per hanger)and hang them on the shower rod. They dry in about 6 hours.Last edited by nuisance26; 07-05-2009 at 03:02 PM.

Sadly nah, the only tree we have that I could hang anything like that from is the pine tree outfront.

I do have a hanging rod downstairs next to the dryer and for now, that's where I'm drying things. I'm gonna hang up the socks and underwear on hangers in the upstairs bathroom and use the kids' closet space for more hanging places.
I looked online and The Brick has one for $369. We just can't afford the dryer right now and I'm not sure if Superstore has outdoor clothes lines or not. I might get a couple indoor drying racks for the smaller things.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

call a repair man.
11% gross to retirement
10% takehome to tithe and offerings
emergency fund maintained at 3000(works for me)
credit card debt 7500
mortgage free
freedom accounts/sinking funds that ebb and flow
then live on the rest!
i am trying something new. LDS church advises savings or debt repayment should be the same as the tithe. 10% each.

I second Lady Kemma, call a repair man tomorrow. It could be something simple and inexpensive. Most likely it will cost less than a new dryer.

It'll have to wait then because I don't know of any good repair people in Calgary and I can't even afford the repair costs.

I feel for you. I've had a broken dryer before and no clothes line. I had to get pretty creative hanging things all over the house to dry.
You said you can't afford a repair man right now. Do you have a neighbor or someone handy that you could call to at least come look at it? I was lucky enough to have a plumber where I used to live that billed me instead of requiring payment right then and there. Maybe you could call and at least see if they would be willing to let you make payments.
Good luck and hope it's fixed soon.

I'm sorry to hear about your dryer. I had a similar situation in the past, since I was not able to replace the dryer right away and it was winter (didn't live in the dessert at the time) so hanging clothes outside wasn't an option, DH hung a clothesline in the garge. DH took 2 heavy duty hooks, screwed them into the wall and hung a clothesline. If I had heavy loads (towles and blankets) I washed a few loads and then took them wet to the laundromat and dried them there. It was not a convient solution but it worked until I was able to find a used dryer that we could afford. I found the deyer by word of mouth. One friend told one friend and so on. I got a dryer for $40., it didn't match but it worked.

Dh actually looked at it for about an hour today and discovered that one of the fuses had blown on it. We're going to call the appliance parts store tomorrow and see what they have in stock to replace it. We're hoping it's just a blown fuse and not the entire motor.

There is a piece that the door hits when it closes at the top inside. Check to see if that is broken off. It happened to me and my dh did fix it by just going to this place that sells parts. They are very helpful in telling you how to fix something because they sell the parts. My dh tells me dryers are very simple machines making them easy to fix. The part I'm talking about is what starts your dryer when you close the door. Hope this helps. It could be pretty inexpensive if it is this part even if you have to call the repairman
Sorry I didn't see your post. I don't think there is a motor on a dryer.Last edited by craftypam; 07-05-2009 at 08:24 PM.

So sorry to hear that! It is a pain to hang everything around the house but sometimes you have to make due with what you have. Hang in there, hopefully you can find a friend to fix it or maybe DH will surprise you and find out what is wrong.

Thanks everyone

DH bought me a retractable clothesline and installed it in the basement. We'll be installing a couple of screws outdoors as well, making it pretty simple to unhook the assembly and put it outdoors when it's nice and keeping it indoors when it's not so nice.
He talked to FIL about the fuse and checked it with a conductive tool. Sure enough, there's no current in the fuse itself. We're going to check on a replacement piece and then go from there. I just refuse to get a dryer right now and figure that the savings from not using the dryer will do us good.Wife to DH since 10/31/2002!

I hope I don't give you more questions than answers. I am assuming the dryer has two fuses. I learned the electrical code in the states and I don't think things are that much different in Canada. Did the dryer complete the last cycle you ran? It is unlikely the fuse blew unless it was running. The time they most blow in during start up. A single phase motor draws much more current then, usually three to four times. When you replace the fuse, make sure you observe the dryer for a while if it runs just to make sure everything is okay. Also, see if the drum will turn by hand before you try it. If the drum won't turn, this could be why the fuse blew. I wish I could do more for you. If I couldn't get it running, I would gladly loan you use of our clothesline.
