Who picks up pennies and why?
I find pennies, and other coins, tossed on the ground quite often. I love to pick them up. When I was little my Gram used to tell us if we found a penny (or other coin), it was our lucky day! So now whenever I see a penny on the ground it brings a smile to my face and, at 50 years old, I still bend down and pick it up declaring to all and sundry "It's my lucky day!"
Recently though I heard that some people don't count change as being worth anything and just toss it away. I used to love going by the bank in the town we used to live in just after payday. Someone was tossing silver coins as well as pennies on the sidewalk! I let the girls pick up the coins. My girls did quite well for an allowance for awhile!2012 Challenges

I pick up all coins even pennies. Like peanut's grandma, mine always said.... "Find a penny, pick it up. All day long you'll have good luck!"
I throw mine in my change jar.

I pick up any coins I find and add them to my "collection."
One time we found almost $5 in quarters strewn along the side of a road.

I've always picked them up because it's good luck, but years ago I found a poem about pennies from heaven and I told my daughter. So til this day she'll say an angel said hi.

Today I found a penny,
Just laying on the ground.
But it's not just a penny,
This little coin I've found.
Found pennies come from heaven.
That's what my Grandpa told me.
He said Angels toss them down.
Oh, how I loved that story.
He said when an Angel misses you,
They toss a penny down,
Sometimes just to cheer you up,
To make a smile out of your frown.
So don't pass by that penny
When you're feeling blue;
It may be a Penny from Heaven
That an Angel's tossed to you.
Pass this on to the people who you care
about and who you feel that are angels to you.
An angel is now watching over you.

I never really thought about why I pick it up. I heard about the luck thing but it doesn't really seem to work for me. I just figure it's found money.

I pick up pennies. I also pick up nails, screws, etc. Found a drill bit on the road the other day - picked it up.
Maybe I need to seek therapy....

No therapy needed for you madhen!! - the rest of the world, perhaps, but not you!!
I pick up any coins I find - it always brings a smile to my heart - don't know why - habit perhaps!?! Love the poem - that creates a whole new scenario!! MahaloTravel light. The baggage of the past can only hold you back.

Yes I do and I do because just like Michelle said, it's money. I can't understand how some people can just toss change on the ground?

Peanut, Did you really think any of this crowd wouldn't.LOL FRUGAL remember. Kids around here think it's uncool to keep pennies,I figure they grow up to be the adults who go bankrupt. I do put it in my other pocket though I wouldn't want it to corrupt all the other well behaved pennies.LOL

I pick up coins for a few reasons, we have parking meters around here for one, the "luck" factor for another, and it's tax-free income of a sort for a 3rd!

My husband has a "young" boss, and when he took over the company for his father he started looking for a wife. The young boss is a seasoned tightwad. He told my husband that he had a test for women on the first date. He would ask them what was the smallest amount of money they would stoop over and pick up in a parking lot. He said he was disgusted by how many woman would NOT pick up anything, or for nothing less than a dollar.
Personally, I don't have a problem picking up ANY coin or bill. The exception to the rule is if there is a child nearby, I'll show them where it is and let them pick it up.
