It annoys me as well. I rarely write checks and most of my bills are paid through my bank which deducts the amount immediately, so 90% if the time the money I have in the bank is mine to keep. I hate having things outstanding. And I check my balance every day. Call me obsessive, but it takes about 3 seconds to log onto my bank account so why not?

"It took 3 months for the school to cash a check for my daughter's yearbook! Three months for a school? Crazy!"
I used to be the yearbook moderator at a parochial school. Here are some possibilities why it took 3 months to cash:
1. We turned in checks to the school office once a week. The local office then held the checks for a week until a person from the central office came to pick them up. Not sure what happened to the checks then, but we were not allowed to deposit them, nor was our local school allowed to deposit them. It drove us crazy, too! I do know that if a family had a bad check in the past, the central office held the check and notified us that this particular family had written a bad check in the past, and did we want to continue with the processing of the check.
2. If the check came in right after school was out for the summer, I didn't see it until school started again in the fall. It just sat in my mailbox at school, as I was not there in the summer.
3. Some kids were supposed to give me a check, but never got around to doing so. The kid was actually holding the check in his bookbag for those months, and the parent thought that I hadn't bothered to cash it.
4. Sometimes a check was written for an insufficient amount for the book. I would hold the check, contact the parent, and wait for the rest of the money to come in before I cashed the original check.
In general I agree with how irritating the held checks are. And in actuality, I tend to hold small ones until I make a run to the bank and deposit them all at once.Last edited by forHISglory; 08-11-2009 at 09:40 PM.

Hey I like using cash, gas station down the street gives me a nickle off for a gallon of gas, when I pay in cash, which I always do. Uh a penny wasted is a dollar foolish, where did I hear that, makes no sense to me.
I meant the saying. Saving a nickle I like

Use the night deposit box.
Just make out your deposit slip, use their envelope supplies they have at the box, and drop in.
I never go to a bank ever except for getting work change money needed.
Using night deposit means I can drop it in the bank any time of day after they are closed. So convenient and it shows up on my online statement in the morning.

I just balanced my check book this morning and a check I wrote January 7, 2009 is still outstanding. I made it out to the church as a memorial to a friend for the cemetery fund (per the obituary information) and stuck the check in with the sympathy card to the family.
I contacted the family after 2 months to see if they received the check because it hadn't been cashed. The family is keeping the checks until they get the memorial completed because they are afraid the church will spend the money.... How stupid is that????

We are bad for that. But with us hubby goes to the bank every 2 weeks and deposits 2 weeks worth of them. With us owning our own buisness customers pay with cash or check. The cash.. We keep at least 30% of it and the rest goes in the bank.
