Default Cool link: homemade pizza stone

    Hi everyone!

I found this page today and thought it was a really cool idea. I'll have to look for these locally. Also, at the bottom of the page, she says that you can bake several loaves of bread on the stored heat from the bricks. That's pretty neat!

I've seen that before. The only problem would be if you wanted a BAKING stone for things with a high fat content, like cookies or pie crust. The pores in the unglazed clay tile are too large for that - the fat seeps into the surface of the clay and turns rancid.

I'm also skeptical of her claims that baking stones have a life of a year or less. I have several baking stones that I bought in 2001.

I've got 6 tiles in the bottom of my oven. They worked ok. I had problems with stuff sticking to them, and of course they got oily and turned black. So if you're one of those people who needs a shiny clean kitchen you'll hate them.

However, the tiles absorb and hold heat wonderfully so I have left them in the oven to "even out" the heat when I bake. We eventually bought ourselves a large pizza stone and it sits on top of the tiles.

Thanks for the website......that is pretty neat.

I have a 'store bought' pizza stone and absolutely LOVE IT. Don't do pizza without it. It makes the crust soooooooo much better. Especially useful when baking a 'store bought' pizza.

OK this is interesting. I have always wanted a pizza stone, but I am too cheap to pay the price. My oven has a heating element in the bottom, so where do I put the tile? Can I put it directly on the rack? Thanks for any help.

Yes. You would put it on the lower rack, and put the pizza on the upper rack. Or you can put the pizza directly on the tile on a rack placed in the center of the oven. Either way. You just don't want direct heat on those tiles - they will crack and you will have a sad mess.
