Broken Cello fixed - You won't believe the cost
Son was in a panic Wednesday after school. "My Cello is broken mom we have to go to the music store to try and get it fixed." He had specific instructions from this teacher, including not waiting.
It rattled not a good sign. Cellos don't rattle. I see $ signs.
I remember how much money my mom's easy to fix on her Violin cost. I see $ signs
Then the look on the repairman face and him saying " this isn't a quick fix" I see more $ signs.
Then we tell him that the orchestra teacher wants it back in a day or two for the BIG Christmas program. The look in the face I see more $$
Then there was the long e-mail from this teacher explaining everything including what exactly is broken, sound post fell down (the sound post is a part IN the cello). I see more $$$
This undertaking seemed like from the way everyone was reacting that it was going to be very expensive.
I pick up the fixed Cello and they say "no charge"
I love our local music store.

My ex taught strings.
Sound posts fall down all the time. It's an easy fix. The TEACHER should have been able to fix it on a Cello easily. My ex used to fix them on violins, for crying out loud.If you could kick in the pants the person responsible for your problems, you wouldn't be able to sit for a month.
Did you know that a 4 year student paying $20,000/year who finances their education graduates with over $103,000 in debt to start? But a student who works and pays cash and takes 6 years to graduate ends with $6,300 in their pocket! So much for "getting a head start by financing!"

Yes, Free is nice
I'm pretty sure the crushed violin they were also fixing was not going to be free. Glad it wasn't ours.

It also looks like you need a sound post gauge for $12.50.
I've heard (for from the music store) that a perfectly set sound post is very important for sound quality. And that you can teak it a bit to make your cello sound a smidge different.
Did I mention we are a very big orchestra town? We even have a try out city full orchestra.

Yes, I've no doubt the post being set perfectly is important for sound quality. Good skill for DS to learn early if he wants to go into music professionally.

Not only would I send them a card of thanks but think I would post something nice about it on CL.
Don't know about your area but our CL has 'thank you' comments quite often. Nice to know there are still some stores that believe in real customer SERVICE. How nice of them!
And great for you too!!
