I splurged
I went shopping today and splurged with gift cards.
I bought a pair of earrings ($12) I walked right up to the case and told the clerk I would like these earrings please. The kids who aren't use to me spending on what looked like a impulse buy were shocked, especially after they had just received and lecture about impulse buying in the toys section with their gift card.
I had to explain to the children that I had been looking at this pair of earrings for months ( from the time one of my similar ones went missing) The sales clerk giggled at my statement to the children.
In other shopping, I bought a flannel sheet set as the flannel sheet set we had ripped and the interfacing fix didn't hold as well as I hoped. So when the set I wanted went on sale I bought it.
I also received from my Mother in law, a gift card to what seems to me to be an expensive store (but then anything seems expensive compared to garage sale and thrift store prices) She made sure it only sold ladies clothing so I couldn't spend my gift card on any one else. (Hubby had suggested that to her) I found a classic skirt and top (shell) that should be very versatile in many seasons. I excited to see the quality as I ordered on line. We don't have the store near us. My Mother in law says she loves the store and finds many good pieces there.
I was an odd sort of feeling doing all the spending and mainly on myself.

I'm impressed!
I guess I have never really done that, I mean go shopping and spend on myself! I usually spend on someone else, I'm going to try and do that!Pine trees, with their needles pointing up to heaven, represent everlasting light and life.

I got a 100 dollar gift card from my dh's brother (he's a bit of a show-off with gifts).... so I used it on something I've been wanting for a while and would never spend 100 bucks on. I got a beautiful king sized quilt for our bed that I will love for years! Usually I would have just bought another 20 dollar comforter that would look like crap after one wash so this was a good investment. Plus it's fun to treat yourself, I'm glad you got to really enjoy your gift cards!

Agree..good for you. You will enjoy for a long time. Even moms need something once in awhile.

You definitely should try it sometime.
I generally don't either. Hence, why Hubby told his mother that it had to be a store I could only spend on myself.
I must confess it was fun (only a bit guilt inducing since it was gift cards) I also must say it was a brilliant idea of Hubby to tell his mother that it needed to be a place I could only buy something for myself. A brilliant man I tell you. He knows me so well.

Good for you. Your children need to see that you have worth to yourself ,that you have self control but are not a martyr. This way you lead by example. They learn self control, to make good choices by being descriminating and that you must honor yourself w/o being selfish. Great lesson from a few gift cards.
If you always give to them and not yourself they think their needs are more important and develop rights of entitlement. Wish someone had explained this to me earlier on. I kinda goofed on this one.

Everyone can have a splurge now and then - it makes frugality the next day and week and month easier. Always saying no can really backfire.
You'll enjoy this. I glad you had the opportunity.Donna
